The market sets the price ... if no-one wants them then that is why they are cheap ... But; don't expect the depreciation to stop there ... The cheapest boats to own are the popular classes even if they are more expensive in the first place, the residuals are greater. |

For me I find it a real shame in where the class it at currently.... all it needed was a few more years of growth and it would of naturally split into two classes racing at the same venue. |

a bit of the horse has already bolted scenario I guess, but you're right, the 10.2 is pretty much dead in the water from a UK 'travellers' class point of view... What will be interesting is to see the PY list in Feb/Mar 2015- will it go up or down? 578 race returns according the PY List printed 21/02/2014. Are folks still using the 10.2 for club racing, or have all the sails been turned into kit bags yet?

I wouldn’t really say it’s a monster.. no more difficult than a Phantom but like most things you’ve got to work hard to get the most out of it. However upwind the Phantom is much much better, most of the time you are racing 400s but with the 100 it’s just damage limitation. I think the monster tag might have come from the gybing aspect where it was difficult in high winds especially if you were at the lower end of the scale (a gybing strop soon sorted that out) Out of the two sails most people thought the bigger sail was better (but was too big for the little uns) and one of the suggestions to solve the difference between the two rigs was to try and cut the smaller rig the same…….. but they didn’t go for that and it’s now a one rig class

The 8.4 was always the more popular- in the UK at least, a rule change has ensured it has stayed that way. And FWIW, I think it's a far nicer boat to sail with the 8.4 up than the 10.2, but you do suffer a bit in RTC racing when you can't get the kite up if you're a little porky.
I think on reflection, the boat would have been much better off being launched with just one rig in the first place, but hey, 20:20 hindsight n' all that. It's just an opinion of course, and it's not like RS can possibly share that view, after all, they are repeating the process again with the Aero.

If you watch a big rig Laser going upwind when overpowered, you can see it sliding sideways in the gusts as wind is spilled, whereas the Radial is powered up more of the time and climbs higher. In the Laser, the extra upwind sail area is worth hanging onto for getting back down wind again. In the 100, you can bung up an extra sail, so there isn't the need for the bigger sail upwind. I'm sure if the boat was unarigged, the big sail would be the dominant one.

I agree, but you can do some pretty wonderful things with a stayed rig on a phantom. Which certainly help tame the beast. Not sure about the 100

The Phantom has 20cm less beam than a RS100 and the real sail area is 11 sq metres, so if 10.2 is also real there is no reason at all why the RS100 should be harder upwind.

Could the RS100 be the used boat bargain of the year?
As James pointed out, you can pick up a four year old boat for 4k, not good for the previous owner but that's great value for a second hand buyer surely? 4k would barely get you a 10 year old phantom or a similarly aged 300 if you were ever likely to find one. If you're not bothered about class racing because you can't afford the time to travel and "class racing" at home is nothing more than extracting your results from a handicap fleet then it looks like a lot of boat for the money to me. Two questions though: Why does it seem to have a reputation as a monster upwind when the big sail is similar in size to a phantom and the boat has a similar beam yet the phantom is perfectly manageable upwind. Why does the 8.4 seem to get the bigger turn out at events? Is it really a boat for lightweights that can't manage the big sail or is there a real performance advantange to it that offsets the reduced sail area? If so, what's the upper weight limit for the small sail? |

it does seem a little steep, I had 480 and sold it for less than that some time ago now- but to be fair, it also looks like a great boat that one, and the 300 class fielded the strongest numbers at the Sprints, so clearly not in the dire straits that one could imagine from its recent change in status.
