I believe that a lot of “engine failures” are due to boats entangling with poorly marked fishing gear, in the old days pots were marked with flags, now they are located by GPS

In general, boat owners do not 'call the Lifeboat' because they have engine failure. They (prudently) inform the coastguard of their problem (that's probably a good thing because the coasty is probably getting calls from passers by already), the coastguard chooses to task the RNLI. AIUI, the RNLI are not complaining about being called out, they would rather attend 10 breakdowns than have one breakdown turn into a life-threatening incident. Of course, we'd all like people to maintain their engines properly, carry enough fuel and look out for pot markers etc. But before mocking too many 'casualties' maybe some of us have got away with our poor planning (so far) and some of us don't get out much.

Even the well prepared experience failures and the RNLI crews are always happy to attend a shout.

So if it happens in another sport, everyone is an idiot on unsuitable equipment. If it happens in sailing...context, nuance, mitigating circumstances (dastardly pot buoys...). ![]() If sailing was booming to the degree of some recent watersports then there would no doubt be plenty of incidents, associated shrill news articles and internet harrumphing. |

Just to say - first time attending Chichester Harbour Race Week (hosted by HISC), an absolutely fantastic event with nearly 400 boats across 3 main fleets and each fleet splitting down into various classes. Being an RS400 we were in the Asymmetric fleet and although confused why a few others (RS500 and RS100) were put into the fast handicap - not sure why, the courses and hospitality was excellent.
Will certainly be visting again - fantastic, casual but competitive format = winner!

That’s great news that the event went well and was a success . Maybe it works because of its location and the fact it’s more like normal club racing just super sized.
The more worrying side of the coin is the Blaze northern has been cancelled due to lack of entries. We live in difficult times for sailing .

Well, 182 boats for the 200 nationals was fairly immense.
A true sight on the water. The bar was rammed every night and I think the final night was probably the largest sailing social I have ever been to. It's been a while since I have done a 200 nationals, but it did remind me why they were once a staple of my summer. Having said that it was a fairly different experience as 35 year old dad, than it was as a 22 year old student, but watching the partying did fill me with nostalgia. They have a young committee, who really worked on the details of the event with a lot of personal touches which was great to see. So, historians out there... when were there last more than 182 boats or 364 sailors at a UK Championships (or any single class event for that matter?)
