2.5 miles for me as well to Tewkesbury, Not for the sailing just for the club, people and beer.  The water is rubbish.
I would join Draycote full time instead of winter membership buts its simply too much money once i factor in fuel, dinghy park, membership vs. the racing i would get with no W/L fleet.  Draycote is about 50 miles away from me.

Russ, why don't you come to Oxford?
 
Winter membership is pretty cheap at £80 including a boat space.
 
There is both an RTC course, and a W/L course set too, so you can choose which you prefer.

I live in Cambridge but sail on the sea... Mindyou, Thorpe bay is easier for me to get to (without a car) than most clubs; Cam and Ely are too small for my lking (both accesible by train easily, Cam by bike even) and there's reasons for not sailing at King George any more (used to go there by train).

I travelled 70 miles to the coast for great sailing on a large bay for years, club fell apart now travel 12miles to sail on 100 acres. So I sail more often but miss the sea.

I hadn't even given Oxford a thought Bob, maybe next year.  However Draycote was super cheap this year for winter membership so i can't complain.  They have really looked after us this Winter and i always enjoy my time up there.  I just cant afford to stay for the summer months.

Hi 5 minutes to the boat and I dont pass any other clubs.
Great sailing on the Solent and good launching once you are used to it.
But not great for fixed rudder single handed launching.

can only admire your dedication to sailing.

i live in coventry and if i had to travel 50 miles to sail i would give it up.
