A little while back I did quite a bit of racing against or on the same course with the world's top A Class sailors, and they never seemed to be faster all-round than the good Tornadoes. That's borne out by the yardstick differential of 6%, which certainly isn't all due to the T's downwind ability.

Of course, that doesn't mean that the A isn't one of the most stunning boats afloat!
Chris, the claim is UPWIND; I've not seen anything quicker uphill; except the C classes with solid sails.....

never start upwind of an A unless you plan to tack off!

D'oh..sorry, I left out the all important "upwind" word; as in the As "never seemed to be faster UPWIND all-round (i.e across the wind range) than the good Tornadoes".

We used to have Steve Brewin (world A Class champ) and the national Tornado champ at the club, and "Stalky" used to be joined by Glenn Ashby on his A and Bundy & Forbes on the T at regattas.  While the As were certainly great performers, from memory they wouldn't normally beat the big Ts upwind, although it was close between the Ts, Taipans and As in the very light stuff.  The As certainly had the edge over the old-style Tornado upwind in light stuff.

We never had to worry about starting upwind of Stalky - the As and spinnaker cats started 5 min later, but he'd still fly through! One consolation is that trying to find some elapsed times on the club archive reminded me that at least we got a few second places to him.

Obviously, you'd have good information from SCHRS results and I'm only going off memory, so it's interesting that your views differ.

Unfortunately what goes up must come down.
From my time in the A i could make the the boat go as quick as the other A`s downwind but couldnt touch the kite boats even a well sailed shadow would beat a well sailed A downwind, not to mention F18`s and tornados etc.

great boats on the water but like anyother single hander a nightmare off it, it would get badly dented on a shingle beach, and you have to be careful they dont blow over as they have a tall rig and weigh next to nothing.
