you should be able to download the software before you uninstall the existing av. Once downloaded disconnect from t'internet, uninstall existing av, install Kaspersky, then reconnect t'internet. Kaspersky will then update and run a scan, or maybe the other way round, scan then update. You may find that it needs to update part way through the installation, if this happens reconnect so that the program can update. Kaspersky should give you enough protection while this happens. You should be ok then

Looked at the Kaspersky via Barclays option and think I will go with it.

Still seems a little bizarre (to my untrained eye) to have to remove my existing AV software, go online, log into my bank account unprotected and then download the new software. Sounds like a potential recipe for disaster, but not aware of any disgruntled barclays customers who are Kaspersky downloaders!!!

Mind you have you seen Barclay's profits? Don't get me started!!

The Moo - All you need is a current account (I think) with online banking to take advantage of Barclays rather useful FREE Kaspersky offer. They also offer (for free) the Kaspersky mobile security suite for smartphones - Good for Barclays to actually provide something useful for their customers (but let's not go too far down that route).

why would you run 3 OSs in parallel? - it might seem clever, but do you really gain anything? I suspect my portable would fall over and die from all of that overhead.

with regard to the free downloadable ones then you cannot help but be slightly exposed without the av. Some of them have the full program that you can download before removing the existing, turn off your internet, install and then restart your internet to just download the latest signatures. AVG only allows you a launcher before downloading the rest via the install process. It then does a scan once installed. On a fast connection this will take about 3-5 minutes. Just make sure your firewall is running. Kaspersky is good especially if free and this installs prior to going online.

As for the risk factor, if you have a router then there is a firewall built in as well as the software one you have on your pc. If you are running windows vista or 7 then they are less of a risk for a virus being downloaded in the first place, if you have xp then you could get a virus within 30s of going online.

Just noticed Barclays Bank offer latest version of Kaspersky free to online customers. Will definitely check that one out as a few people on here have sort of given it the the thumbs up and our IT guy at work recommended it too.

You can buy the antivirus software on CD (just go in any of the usual retail outlets), if you want real peace of mind.

Last time, I enabled Windows Firewall and disabled the AV software's firewall to download and install the new antivirus kit. The "current" AV will not go quietly, mind, when you come to uninstall it!

So having removed the old software offline, what protection do you have when you go online to download the new.......or is it a wing and a prayer?

You need to remove the old one first as the two programs
can conflict and crash your PC. Make sure you are
disconnected from the internet before you remove the first
program though, otherwise you are putting yourself at risk.

EDIT: Sorry to the guy above me, I have posted exactly what
you posted without realising. Your post wasn't there when I
read the thread :/ Sorry!
