I can recomend a TomTom One its easy to use, gets you to the destination and does the job.  As with any sat nav you still need to use your common sense when driving, its not a magic gadget that means you can't go wrong or get lost...

I travel a lot in my job (Spian, Portugal, Germany, France, Belgium, Netherlands so far this year) and have looked at buying a prat nav, but I have always just hired one with the car - so I can honestly say I have used a good number of those on the market.  They are all similar in constructon and method of use (I agree with James that finding how to change language can be fun).  My recommendation would be to have a play with a number of them and then just buy what 'feels' right.

Ive had both Garmin and TomTom over the years and my own
observations are that...
The Garmin is better if your planning a holiday. Easier to
plan routes and save them via the PC but for daily, getting
from A to B stuff the TomTom is quicker and easier to work
with.

Horses for courses I guess... but I have a TomTom again at
the moment!

James, she loves her car more than I love my boats....the drama of the weekend was her completing a full 360 spin on a wet A1 sliproad - much more concerned about the car than she was for herself (fortunately both relatively unscathed) so a new car just isn't going to happen any time soon....

The sat nav is mostly to get her to meetings in the UK, but I'm guessing it would find its way into the super Sub for the occasional boat trip to Europe.

Since she's also an ergonomist and therefore puts the needs of the end user first, I'm guessing a trip to Hellfords is on the cards, though I'm definitely mindful of the strength of feeling in favour of Tom Tom.

Thanks guys
the same, but different...

i really didn't like the tomtom i borrowed. I have a garmin nuvi and its simple to use (even my mum finds it ok!!!!!). Always gets you there and the times are usually slightly overestimated so you always get there on time even with traffic. They are also very cheap, i saw one new for £60 the other day.

I downloaded Nav n Go iGO8 for my mobile which works very well.

Have used various different makes of sat nav unit and tom tom is easily the best. Much better than the built in Alfa sat nav that wont allow you to enter postcodes!

Just bought a Tom Tom from Comet and got 5% off using the code MVC5. This code gives 5% of everything.
