Trouble is if you pick up the wrong piece of kit at a club 300 miles or more from home, you have no idea who it belongs to or anything its a bit of a challenge to attempt to return it...

I got a list of the visitors clubs & they are all local, within say 20 miles. I also emailed the secs of them to pass on a message.

I've had a watch stolen from the peg above my bag while I
showered at hayling last week, and a wet zhik fleecy rash
vest stolen when drip drying on a peg and I was in a de-
brief last summer, this was on a very quiet weekday at
draycote I have also known people to have money
stolen out of their bags and make sure I have as little as
possible either locked in my bag or a locker

Give it a bit more time, there is still a strong chance somebody will realise next weekend that they have 2 pairs of wet hikers in their bag!!! Its very easy to see a bit of kit by your feet the same as yours and just pick it up thinking it's your own, forgetting you've already put yours away...

The other question is have you identified them in any way, have you written your name in them, there is good reason for doing this at schools as everybody has the same or similar uniform, and to be honest the same thing applies in the club changing rooms, so I would advise everybody to personalise their kit in some way so it can be identified.

Boat number if you think it's too childish to have your name written in it....

I think it's worth just going along next week, it's very possible that you could find someone wandering round with your hikers asking if anyone knows who they belong to. Chances are it's a mistake and they picked up yours along with their own kit but have no way of reuniting them with the rightful owner. Lets face it how desparate must you be to steal a used pair of hikers that for all they know, you could have gone commando in and/or peed in?

I once left a dry top and ba at Ripon SC and they were kind enough to post them to me, and I once drove off from Grafham and left all my Laser gear (prime candidates for stealing or ebaying) in a pile next to my boat - foils, carbon tiller, sail, ropes, kicker - and it was still there the next week.

I have to say there are often piles of expensive kit left lying around our changing rooms for ages because people have simply forgotten them.  Many never get claimed.

I was having a joke at the expense of my other half when I said trust no one, but there are some clubs where I'm more careful than others, just as there are some clubs who know they have a problem; getting in and out of the changing rooms at Datchet can be especially challenging if you don't know the code to the inner door!
the same, but different...

I thought Datchet was a bar code swipe to get into the changing rooms - maybe that's why you struggled!!

Seriously though - be careful at datchet and QMSC.  I have heard of thefts of car keys from both sets of changing rooms and the theives making off with the car!!

I wish more clubs had the little swimming type lockers for keys, wallet, phone etc.  Mind you that probably has insurance implications for the club

UPDATE! UPDATE! HIKERS RETURN!!  Went along & picked them up from an old chap who'd mistakenly put them in his kitbag after sailing - so faith in humanity well restored now  . Thanx Alan! Job to do when I get in tonight though..... write name & phone number in all of my kit..... surely a good idea to anyone sailing away from home?? Happy bunny now I don't have to shell out for a new pair again........

Great news.

Not sure calling someone 'old' is any way to thank them though...
