I think that's okay on the odd occasion. An adult winning a youth class champs year after year is a bit suspect though.

I dunno; depends on the individual; when I was a nipper in Toppers John Caig (ex-Fireball Champion) was the man to beat for a while and he really helped the kids in the class ...

Depends what you define as a youth class I guess. The Byte is as much a lightweights boat as a youth boat and even the Topper wasn't marketed as a youth class in its early days.

Yes, it would depend on the individual and their motives, but if helping out the kids is the primary motive, that can be done from the sidelines without entering the event.

Andy Patterson won the Pico nationals a few years ago. They were being sailed at his local club, and he already owned a Pico for the family so I say it's fair game!

Upon further consideration I think it must be a good thing. Look what Mr Cockerill has done for Streaker and now Graduate. Graduate was a dying class, which was a shame, and now with a new modern properly designed main and an updated boat turnouts are good and old hulls are being dragged out of the nettles for refurbishment. And all because Steve wanted to race with his young son in a Championship.

Sure - and perhaps he wanted to sell a few boats / sails and other spares in the process.  Nothing wrong with that as it's great to see a trad class being refreshed in such away - very similar to when the firefly class invented the rondar plastic boat and have now sold close to 400, which isn't bad for a 60 something year old design.

I reckon the RS200's will be pretty tough this year, especially if some of the younger members of the fleet turn up e.g Ben Saxton, James Peters - be interesting to see if they can put one over the 'old hands'

Hmmm, rather I think he's realized he can make good business from selling complete boats, covers and sails over what he can make selling hikers to laser sailors.  But the successful traditional classes are all pretty catered for so he's made some good moves with ones that weren't doing so well.  Well done to him, boats like the grad and streaker deserve more publicity and recognition than they get and he's helped them do that.

The 200 champs have been one of the toughest champs for the last few years IMO.  This year will be no exception.

Most competitive class? Mine, of course! Whatever that happens to be at the time...

There are certainly classes where even getting into the top half of the fleet can be regarded as a big challenge, one which, despite being a decent inland sailor, I fail to manage in the Firefly fleet. I'm sure there are many fleets like it. Mostly, they are the old fleets with lots of history, but the 200 seems to have made it.
