That would be 30'000 less cars for car mechanics to work out. By putting
new car builders INTO work, you potentially take car repair shops OUT of
work. Not really the smartest idea in the world.
However it would work with sails, bearing in mind that the people making
and the people repairing are one in the same so no jobs lost.
I don't like the idea of scrapping boats though. Sailing is already criticized
as being too expensive to get into and scrapping all the older cheaper boats
would in no means help the situation.

Gesture politics from our wonderful government?

Not a chance, they've not even heard of the term

Why not have a scrappage scheme for houses. Knock down all the ones that are more than 100 years old, and subsidise a new-build on the same plot. That'd get the builders working again

Even better idea.

What about a crew srappage scheme!

Trade in your old tired crew and get all your beer paid for in exchange for taking on a younger one

I have to say after today's disaster involving a stiff breeze, a fixed rudder, a bent pintle and a safety boat I would happily donate the C boat for recycling, and since my hero rescuer was sailing a 600 and having an excellent time till he saw me doing the damson in distress bit, I'll be having what he's got, please
the same, but different...

Ah, the joy of fixed rudders.

You know what they say though, no pain no gain.

Judging by the state of my hands at the end of the ordeal, I'd say more of a prune...

There was plenty of pain (mental anguish), but I did gain almost a mile downwind.... , impressively rudderless....I think I was so determined to get the damned thing on (before I realised the pintle was bent) it just didn't occur to me to tack round.....

I thought the trade-in car scheme was partially intended to get rid of older cars that pollute more.

Scrapping old boats (i.e. bonfires) isn't good for the environment!

The old boats could be burnt in one of those CO2 stripping powerstations, so you'd get electricity from them and the CO2 is magically made somebody else's problem...

However, a better idea would be scrapping older helms, so that younger helms no longer have the embarrassment of being thrashed by someone with a grey beard and no hair, and so don't leave the sport to take up kitesurfing. I'm sure my children would trade me in for £2000.
