Not only that, but 13 is a good age for a Topper - if he does any events it'll be full of similar age kids.

A perfect size for the topper and if it's big fleet racing he wants, the topper
circuit gets FAR FAR larger numbers at their big events and has a tightly packed circuit and plenty of training on offer all over. |

Great shame there is not a strong Laser fleet in West Wales.
I guess you get a catch 22 situation where there is not a strong Laser fleet so people do not sail Lasers, so there is not a strong Laser fleet, A lanky 55Kg is already big enough to sail a Radial. If he is struggling in the 4.7 it is technique not weight that is the problem. I would strongly suggest he gets in a Laser ASAP as he should be in the Radial in the next 6 months!!! |

For fleet racing & for where you sail - topper However if he`s at the top weight for a topper then he will need to sell the boat in a years time anyway,So I would say that the laser is properbly the better buy because he & the boat can "grow" together.

well i hope not he's already taller than me just about
He's lanky so he is tall and slim, he's more likley to bulk out more than grow in an upwards direction but he is only 13 so im sure he will continue to climb for a number of years.
he was strugling the other day in a topper 4.2 rig in a F5 |

Jim's right the 4.7 is a dog. I'd go for a Topper for the fleet racing but it might be worth bearing in mind your brother is (I think) at the top end of the weight range for a Topper and at the bottom of the range for a Radial, is he likely to have a sudden growth spurt? |

The 4.7 has an active circuit and teaches the fundamental boat handling skills required for the larger Laser rigs.
I think if your brother does one season in the 4.7 he will then be in good shape to move onto the Radial the following season. Although I raced the Radial International at 55Kgs, there were not 4.7 rigs around in my day! If you let me know where you are based I can send you details of the Laser regional training. |

at the threat of commenting i would say that the 4.7 is more fun to sail along as you can say that their will be more than 10knts of wind which means that they can perfom to handicapp. i was in a similar posistion 2years ago and went for the 4.7 as after 6 months in topper i hated the surfboard style hull that isnt good in short chop which is common where i sail. Also 4.7s where sailed by the top youngesters at the club. turns round and runs at this point just my 2p

Well i used to sail the radial at 55kgs and in anything over a F4 i was overpowered. Also ive sailed both the 4.7 and the topper and to be honest i had a lot more fun in the topper. The 4.7 always seems to be underpowered probably down to the lack of foot. Also if you say there is more topper racing than lasers then i think you have answered your own question...
