I havn't sailed the either the V3K or the 500 but I would put my money on the V3K round the course in windy conditions.

If you can't carry it, don't sail it!

Haven't sailed the 3000, but the L3000 is cracking boat.  Rented one with my brother a couple of summers back.  The spinny sheets were a tad on the small size, but I think that sail has to go down as my best ever.  F4-5, 3 sail reach across the Carrick Roads... wow, total laugh despite having only trapezed once before.  It was great until, on about our 4th capsize my brother said, 'Err we've got a problem.  We don't have a rudder'.

Would love to have a look at a 3000.  By the way, does it have a more sorted spinny launch system than the L3000?  I don't know if it was the boat I sailed [old and needed some TLC] but I found it really annoying.

At the moment I would rate..
1) RS500 2) L3000 and very distant 3rd) Vago

Off topic warning! Yes, the L2 pole is long and bendy, but the length is really nice - pity the Fireball doesn't have a longer pole like it. As to bendy - that is appalling - one guy was said to be using a J24 pole till I they banned it, though I think they've relaxed the rules now to allow any pole of the correct length, 2.5 metres - same as a 505.

Hmm, 0-5 RS500's at Datchet, then, comparable to the four 3000's we get out regularly at Wilsonian (double that this weekend). Realistically, I don't see us (or any other class) reaching club fleets with 100-boat turnouts these days, though. But we've discussed the class vs handicap thing to death on other threads already.

Wow; I never knew that. How many race there now?

Between 0 and 2.  There are three university clubs who have them and occasionally get them out for a club race.  I still take mine out when there are no other RS500's and it's blowing force 5 to 6.

I always thought the spinnaker pole looked far too long and bendy ...

Not sure where you're going to find a club fleet of 100 active boats anywhere these days - certainly not consisting of RS500's at any rate. In the meantime, I prefer to sail a boat that suits me, and I don't mind trying new things in case they suit me better. So far, nothing beats the V3k.

Ross - we're racing Saturday too!

Well there were 5 RS 500's in the Club races at Datchet last Sunday.  I know we have a long way to go to get back to 100 boats but its a start.

I believe it's 12, maybe one or two more.

We're a better marketing team because we really believe in the boat we sail!

I'm guessing you're a Laser 2 sailor, which I was every weekend for five years in the '90's. But the latest 3k's are really everything I ever wanted in a Laser 2 (like a controllable rig, and fittings of decent quality) and a lot more besides. You need to try one before you comment further. Just pm me your location and we can try to fix you a go; if you want to criticize the V3k after that, fair play.

I joined the Laser 2 fleet many years ago because there were 100 of them at my local club.  When you can say the same about the v3000 I'll be happy to come for a test sail.

In the meantime I'll be following the "20 billion can't be wrong" argument because that is the only hope I see of attracting new people into this sport.

What club had 100 L2s?
