I want a go too......but I'm not sure if I dare!

What I mean is, if I try foiling, will it be so wonderous and orgasmic that I never want to go back to sailing a 'normal' dinghy ever again?

In a way that would spoil it for me...I think.....

So am I right in thinking the rope dangling from the bow is attached to the foil under water. In the picture above it looks like the rope end is out of the water.

What's this proder bit?

Has anyone got a picture of the set up out of the water.

The picture of the 600 is a good as any other picture for showing the set up of the system, most of it is run internally. The wand on the front pivots back when the boat is in the water, and when the boat goes up the wand is pulled forward by elastic. The head of the wand is attached to either a cable (visible on the 600) or a rod running through the front tank. This emerges in the cockpit and is attached to a lever on the top of the centreboard, when pulled forward by the cable the lever forces down a pushrod running through the centreboard down the midde, which then attaches to the flaps on the trailing edge.

Merlinmags - yes foiling is the most amazing experience, the feeling of weightlessness and acceleration is just surreal. It's a bit like the first time you surf down a really big wave, only better.

Thanks Jamie that's a lot clearer now. What I thought was a rope is the wand. I assume they are made from glass or carbon fibre.

It's not rope. It's a plasitc or carbon rod, see pic below.

Ok, you see the rod in a up position in the photo. This is as it would be if the hull was in the water and not foiling. You can see the connection rod/cable that goes into the boat, it's red and goes past the "on the prowl" name on the side of the foredeck. As the wand goes up and down, trailing on the water surface it pulls or pushes the rod you can see next to the foredeck.  You can see it clearer in the photo below.

The rod pointing to the left runs a long the foredeck into the cockpit of the boat, on the floor. There it connects to the top of the dagger board as shown in the photo below.

The daggerboard isnt in the pic, but the end connects to it. The daggerboard has a rod going down through the middle of it attached to the adjustment flap on the main foil, so as the boat goes up or down, the wand follows the water surface and automatically adjusts the main foil trim tab angle. See below.

Needs to sail more...

Looking at them at the Bloody Mary, then the pictures after, I just thought it was some sort of "painter" not realising it was a technical part to the foiling process.

Can I thank everyone for answering the questions as I don't feel such a fool now for asking what I thought was a daft question!

So who did think of the wand (as a way to adjust foil angle automatically) first? And what year was it?

Damn shame they didnt apply for a patent....
