My take is that an experienced (heavier) adult in Topper in a blow is inclined to lead to a broken boat. So I'm not too surprised that this guys club won't hire him a boat. I suspect that many club boats don't cover their costs anyway based on a realistic view of actual costs v hire income but clubs have probably accepted this because they've taken the view that club training/club hire fleets is a key part of getting newcomers into the sport. Usage of club boats for experienced guys going for a blast in a blow - not something I'd want to fund.

Thats why i wanted to get one to use.

Chances are it would get broken at some point

I have taken a topper out in a F7 and kept it upright, they are not nice to tack in that wind.

Has anyone anything small for cheap or free?

OK I take it all back as we found a Topper at our club for you today. And you are welcome to come and pick it up anytime. (as long as you come before we take it to the tip!!)

It has no spars, no rudder, no daggerboard, no trolley, no cover, the floor in the cockpit has separated from the hull and the mast cup has been driven through the hull. Apart from that it is fine.

Yeah, and it's of a lovely shade of blue under the mouldy bits.

The Noble marine stolen boats list is full of Toppers that people have got for free! Other than that, expect to pay at least £200, and only that if you happen to be lucky and find one that the parents have realized their kids are never going to sail, and they just want shot of it. On the other hand, for £600 or so you can get one capable of winning races, so it might be worth shaking the piggybank a little more if you really want one. Much cheaper are small singlehanders where the class has died - there was a Fusion on ebay recently that went for pennies - a boat like that will happily get broken just like a Topper in a 7, with the added advantage of not needing to be mended to suit class rules.

when you do eventually get a topper make sure you tie the bowsprit for the new A-sail down to the painter eye at the bow properly or you will pull the deck off, does't help the bouyancy much!   Ahhh, those weere the days
