£16,000 for a new 505 is a bit too much but the boat will be bullet proof and is likely to be competative for 10-15 years if it's well looked after.

There are rumours that a set of freemantle moulds have been sold to a company in china which could bring the price down to a more reasonable amount.  Zieg now have the ex-kyrwood moulds but will only consider building boats after the 470 gets canned from the olympics.

There is only one way to tell if a boat is over priced and Rick the marketing man will confirm this.

If a boat does not sell the main reason is that it is overpriced. As Lasers sell in vast quantities they are not overpriced. In one marketing model at least price determines demand. But is this happening in sailing?

so which boats does this make overpriced? isnt price also determined buy what the consumer will pay? or is that demand as well?

The problem with that model though is that in a market as varied as this its neigh on imposible to tell which boats dont sell because they are overpriced, and which wouldnt be selling any more no matter what price they were!

The price of a new 14 is rediculous... Ive heard many a story about £20k+ boats

The top three 14s (all Bieker 5s) at the worlds last year were built as a batch in North America.  The pretty well founded story is they cost $50k (£25k ish) each.  They were autoclaved carbon on a nomex core, with custom built rigs, fittings, foils and sails, PBO rigging la la la... They took a lot of building. Worth every penny.. Proof, straight out of the box (or autoclave if you prefer) they nailed the top 3 positions at one of the hardest world championships to get a result in.

A UK built equivilent would cost about the same (Katies boat at the dinghy exhibition for example) although you could downgrade some of the systems and save a few grand.  A German built Speedwave B5 14 bare hull is 16,000EUR - but then you need a rig, sails, fittings, foils, trailer, covers...

Too expensive = no sales is a maybe a good guide. Moths are up at what, £7k?and just like the 14s there is a waiting list for boats from every builder.

Why so expensive - go and build one and you'll find out!!!

A new national 12 with carbon spars and p&b sails will set you back a fair bit

Maybe someone needs to do a comparison that includes points per foot of hull, speed (based on handicap), Materials, Competition (how many racing boats) etc etc.

That way you could work out what the most pricey boat is for what you are buying. That does not mean it is overpriced, however.

For any non smod you can pay as much as you want. The fact is that very few people ever buy the base boat. Everyone wants a fast boat which means the best fittings, rig, foils etc etc.

It's not so much boats are overpriced, perhaps people over spec them?
