We have a 16 to 1 on the five-oh. The cascade initially provides less friction than a 2-1 system would, under the top loads (we also have a sizeable pulley slung off the boom). Agreed that the final pulley does travels a distance - in our case, the full length of the plate case. I guess that many classes would struggle, unless they mounted a pulley on the inside of the prow...!! Chas |

Mine is an Osprey, also 16:1. 2:1 through a block on the boom, another 2:1 cascaded off that and a two ended 4:1 as the last element - Harken 16mm air blocks are fine for everything except the boom block - that would not be the case in other arrangements! Since the top block travels very slowly under biggest load a plain bearing wire block works perfectly here. I get plenty of throw without needing to add purchases along the case.

I sail a Europe and I don't know what the purchase is but it is a lever bar system. Works quite well, a lot of force but not much variation

Yes I'd forgotten Europes. I was tempted to mention a lever system in my previous posts. I used to sail Scorpions and the small range of movement in its boom made it ideal for a lever system. I remember a very effective and low friction system I had made from a 250mm lever with about a 40mm throw between 2 wire strops. I think with a 2:1 on the end of the lever it gave me easy adjustment and about 12:1. I remember being so impressed with levers I had one on the end of the boom to control the foot outhaul - it worked a treat.

That's probably about 24:1 by the looks of it, 4:1(ish) from the lever and 6:1 from the purchases. Levers are invaluable in the limited space on boats such as the Finn, Europe and OK. I think they went out of fashion on most boats as block technology has moved on and higher purchases are now practical than they used to be. My 1976 national 12 had a lever on.

My Finn Lever is 5.7 :1, so with a 3:1 off that and a 2:1 final I have 34.2:1.

Of course some levers allow easy alteration of the power by having several pin holes on the lever. Or you could go the whole hog and get the Star arrangement with the curved track and a traveller car!

the star system is amazing. but can be a bit of an arse i taught a guy in a europe over the weekend and was playing round with his rig settings off the water. i didnt realise how tweaky it was. looks like a nice boat to sail. even if it has very little freeboard aft |

Lovely boat the Europe, much more adjustable than a Laser, too small for me though.

We use a lever on the MPS with a 2:1 ... works great. Similar on the 49er.
