In what way does that constitute an excuse? Surely the opposite: he ought to know better! Tha vality of the concept of bunging new bits on old classes was nicely settled at the ISAF trials that produced the 49er... the turboed up FD made the Boss and the 5 Tonner look good! |

Good way of making a test bed for new ideas, though. If the "swinging bowsprit" works, then it could be an answer for small lakes where current fast asymmetric boats are usually unable to sail to handicap - perhaps on a specially designed hull in the end.

He is however doing what other people have done before. Taken the 505 hull and modified it. I believe there are other designs out there which are more or less streched and chopped versions of the 505. Speaking to the guy at Southampton he seemed passionate about the boat even if purely as a one off for himself. Not that I pesonally would want one but it is an interesting concept taken old wreaks of 505 and converting them. |

Yup, great project for older 5o hulls and agree with Rupert as to the reasons. There is no vintage / veteran system in place for older 5o's like there are Merlins, so why not have a bit of fun with the old hulls. Higher boom as well so rather more comfy.

I'm pretty sure the Supernova was taken from a chopped down 505 mould. Look at the bow to see the family resemblance
Seperately, what's the copyright position? People have been making perfect copies of AC Cobras long after the 505 was designed. Is it fair game to take and hack as you like after 50+ years? Edited by Norbert |

I think the RS400 has had a swinging bowsprit for 13 years!

the 400 bowsprit wobbles more than swings, it doesnt change the angle sufficiently for river sailing. i dont think it does anyway, river sailing a symetric kite really is the only way.

It depends how well set up your pole system is in hte 400. we could get our pole arround a long way. In light winds we never had an issue going as low as 505's. Once the wind gets up you wont sail to your handicap going this low but it can be done

I'm much of the same opinion as everyone else here, although the Alto did go well in the light stuff, it does have the same system as the 400, and my helm did say why would you take the worse bits of a 505 and the worse bits of a 400 and mash the 2 together. The 505 is with out a doubt one of the greatest ever boats, but i can see a market for the alto! The 400 on a river isnt very good i have been sailing on a river for 20 years, and the 400 ant get near an Albacore, Solo etc.
