In our club over the last year and a half the RS400 fleet has grown from about 8 boats to around 16.  It's been all about having great fleet racing and everyone knowing it's the sailors and not the boats :-)

Possibly they've all put the wetsuits into retirement and dawned yellow wellies....

Plymouth is brilliant for big boat sailing, and during the winter time has a cracking Laser series when all the yacht sailors take time off for a bit of fun. The 90s were a bit of a boom period for dinghies, maybe the reduced numbers within a fleet is a sign that the boom period is coming to an end. 12 years ago we are waiting for Topper or Laser to launch another high performance boat, imagine the mass suprise if they launched something high performance nowadays.....

Interesting that the Enterprise and GP14 aren't there, and in fact seem to be doing better than the majority of asymmetric classes (despite the ridiculous sheeting system on Ents!).

As for the Wayfarer, I've met so many 'ordinary sailors' who prefer varied club-style courses at interesting locations - the highest nats attendance in recent years was at Falmouth, with racing all over the harbour.

But since then the nats and regionals have largely been on sausage-triangles, usually on some anonymous crinkly bit of sea. Loved by the top-runners who just run through their routines, but a turn-off for the average, less-serious sailor.

The 505's drop is interesting. Back in the '70s, they were about 7th most popular boat (in terms of nationals attendance)*. Everyone seems to agree they are still one of the best boats ever designed and they can be built to last for decades, but the class has dropped a loooooong way from its old position.

I wonder why - are they just too expensive???

*Arguably, the average speed of the most popular classes in the '70s was greater than it is today. The 'Ball and 505 were well in the top 10. We can provide lots of opposing explanations about what all that means!

i agree i think the new sails for the buzz and iso look good but i don't think there going to solve the problem i think the problem is proberbly hull weight which is quite high and hull shape . sorry for any 1 who sails a buzz or iso

I think one problem is you just can't buy I a good 2nd hand boat (8200-8500 age), I don't know who's got them all, but I know they're not selling/sailing them!

Think the long luff spinnaker killed the class at club level. If you look at the history of turnouts at nationals, turnout halves in  2001, and has never recovered. IIRC, wasn't that when they brought in the bigger kite? Sold my boat a year before or so, so I can't remember.

Hmmm, that would be an interesting angle, and totally against my theory that retro-fitted mods can help a class .

I must remember to look into that later.
