That's good point. How much string are we talking about here? You would have to grab the lazy sheet right at the block to stand a chance.

The MPS needs both hands to raise/drop the kite. How does that compare with the 700's pump system? I know you need two hands on the F16 and Shadow but they give a far more stable platform to work with.

Racing the 700's at the Tide Ride the MPS seemed to be able to hoist & drop faster than the 700 with a pump system - this can be seen on the blue boat video of the 2005 event.

The real advantage of the pump is that you have a spare hand to steer with,  a real plus for us mortals....

Yep, you do have to go onto a dead run before you can drop in all but the lightest winds. You need to be almost right in the middle of the boat to drop so without a crew to keep the weight out you have no leverage at all, you'll be over before you can even think about dropping if you dont.

Also, hiding the kite right behind the main like you see in Ian's video makes the drop far easier, if you miss a pull on the downhall the kite will float nicely for a while rather than turning into a fishing net.

Not to minimise the achievement cos it was very impressive, but having a kite that can gybe without being impeded by a jib must help. It certainly fills quickly so the apparent wind would stay forward.

The small advantage of not having a jib in the way is massively outweighed by the fact that you only have one hand to get the kite to pop. I found this by far the hardest part of the gybe (bar simply staying upright :)). You have to pull through a lot of string but if you fluff it you dont have another hand to regrab further down the sheet! Next time your sailing an assymetric try getting the kite to pop using only one hand, then imagine trying to that do whilst concentrating on steering with the other! Of course in some boats this is impossible - seems to me the Musto kite has been well designed to minimise the need to pull a lot of sheet to trim it, which is just as well...

Have a look at this, its a short video of Ian Renlison gybing a Musto Skiff. It should be useful to anyone needing a few tips. Is it really that easy??
