Under the heading of planned but never undertaken. Take one 1960s Hornet, remove unnecesary wood (all but the 4 planks that make form the hull form Sadly, I had more in the way of ideas than garage space and cash at the time so took the second most exciting option and sacrificed it to god of hellfire instead! |

Boats that could be built super light using modern materials versus
their original weight vs power ratio: Osprey, Hornet, Fireball, 505,
Solo(!), Blaze X, ISO, Buzz, Boss, L5000, L4000, L2000, RS400, RS200
... you could go on a long time
One boat I always thought was right for a bit of garage customisation was the N12, now if you took a bigger stick, higher aspect upwind sails (think i14/49er) and big assy plus added nice wide hiking racks (B14 style) then I think you might be on a winner, have to go for a shute for the kite so perhaps a foredeck-less design might be best 'donor' to start with (no way would you want to get as far forward as a bag for launching!) T-foil rudder might help in the nose dive/pitching dept and would probably need to bond in some foam bouyancy as dodging the bags as you run across rack-to-rack might be a bit of an obstacle course. May as well go for a dagger bd as well for good measure. Basically a big rig, 12ft, lightweight B14 with raking rig...... ![]() |

Contender, don't forget the Contender. At 83kg hull weight it would be interesting to see what difference it would make to shave/hack off a few kg. Of course we're a much more conservative fleet than the boat would suggest so it'll never happen. |

What's your Contender made of? Wood? Nothing much to shave there... Still, it would be great if the hull could drop a bit of weight. At 83 kgs (recommended, without the obligatory water in the hull), it weighs almost 25 kgs more than me. The other day, I was left struggling on the beach, trying desperately to get the boat across a patch of soft shingle, most to the delight of all the guys sitting on the start line. |

I said sort of. ![]() Funny though as I am about to get going on a Cherub with adjustable racks for hiking as well as single trap and double. Which should be fun. |
