Hike like this with straight legs and you knees will be OK. Bent legs = lots of force on your knees even if it isn't as hard work.

I tried hiking with my arms higher than in M Liddell's pic, and yes it did stuff my elbows - just before the worlds.

I think BNS's mate will be a bit off the pace; too much heeling, not enough leaning and as pointed out earlier, toes up is bad for the knees. Rooster did a good article on it some time back which I think is still on the website.

LOL LOL LOL How misleading a photo can be! He was just about to tack next to the committee boat and, when it comes to posture, I think he could give a lot of people a good lesson...

My point regards Keams picture was the front arm was forward which can cause grip problems and the ankles are pointed which can cause a lot of problems for the ankles. Her technique has improved since the picture was taken.

Pointing your toes up is not bad for the knees it just makes it harder to straighten keep your legs if you have tight hamstrings (bent legs are bad for your knees). Like many things in life having the feet in a neutral position provides the best compromise of protection for both the ankles and knees.

The above picture is taken just before a tack, hence the helm has slid in the boat and also moved the the upper body in and slightly back to help get over the wave. The toestrap is also still quite tight from coming round the leeward mark, with the aim being to stay high for the first part of the windward leg before letting the strap out out port.

Yes there are cleats on the Laser, which the helm was very kindly lent for the day.

Having moved from trapeze boats to a 200 to sail with my young son and just the wrong side of 50 I put the question of knee longevity to my physio recently. He said build up your thighs and there won't be a problem.

So now you know!

I hope your physio is a sailing specialist, because there can be a lot more to it than that...

Here's a link to the Rooster article...
