i woul say no - they are all carbon, unless it is one that someone has just bodged on! It should be fairly easy to tell if it is or isnt.

my 600 had an Angel mast and even with an incompetent lump like me dangling from it and sticking in the water at all different angles it was fine.  I wouldn't worry about the type of mast too much.

At the top of the rig the SuperSpar mast has a plastic mast head sheave box which goes into the top of the mast. The Angel mast however just has a sheave mounted inside the carbon, so that there is no specific sheave box put into the top of the mast.

I hope that made sense, it is obvious when you see it.

There are two different versions of the Angel mast the original ones which have the aluminium sleeve for the stump, and the slightly later ones which finished production about six years ago that have a carbon sleeve for the stump. Just for information the later Angel mast has a different sail feeder to the early ones, it was bad wording on our website I have now changed it.

If you have any questions please get in contact.

Many thanks for clearing this up! Is there any way of easily telling which angel mast is which without doing a direct comparison of the feeder? Some of the people selling used 600s don't seem to know which mast they have on them.

Last year i did some racing against a friend, ive a superspar and he had an angel mast.  After racing in various conditions (light marginal trapezing up to top end of a force 4) we found there to be no Noticable performance difference between the masts.  Ive no doubt there are people who believe the contradictary but IMHO i dont believe there to be any performance difference.
As for the concern of Angels prone to breaking easily - This is no doubt a fair concern as (im under the impression) this was the primary reason superspars took over.  However my friend who had an angel, had his boat for about a year and after selling it around october last year i believe the mast is STILL in action with its new owner.  Plus there is another 600 at my home club with an Angel mast and although he hasnt had it for long, the boat is fairly old, but the mast is still going strong.

General opinion around the circuit seems to be that either mast can be competitive and several people do still sail with the older angel mast. The angel mast has been the cause of high insurance prices for the 600 for since its release. As SS masts have gradually replaced angels through breakages insurance costs are coming down.
I guess if buying an older 600 you can take your chances and claim if necessary (although your future premiums will go up)!
The boat is quite a tricky little beasty to master so keeping the aforementioned out of the wet stuff is far more important initally! Superb boats tho, and just about the most bang for buck around!!
