But you do get a clear lane for the first two tacks of the beat

Except you cannot take advantage of any shifts, go left if favored and have to hike for longer. I would still dodge being path finder rather than be it given the chance...

But if it was massively undesirable then you may get a strange game playing out when the 10th placed boat approaches the finish line...  "After you, no after you...".

Yes, that was always the story but with the present system where a pathfinder gets a net 3-5 lengths head start and clean wind up the whole beat the 9th place boat is likely to play the same games...

Fireflies gybe around for decades, if I remember right. I was never in danger of being the pathfinder, unless they added a zero. Not sure when the change to tacking happened, but it made sense.

Ents used to have to gybe round in the annals of prehistory. I understand but was changed very quickly!

As far as I am aware in the classes that were early adopters and inventors. It has always been to tack.
Gybing round in anything less than a force three in most boats would be a significant disadvantage. And there would have been lots of stories about capsizes or swamping.
No one would be willing to be the gate boat.

The Lasers made the change in the mid-1980s. If it was windy the pathfinder had a difficult job to bear off and make a faultless gybe to pass anywhere close to the guard boat. The pathfinder was already at a disadvantage having their start position dictated for them, and a start line with 150+ boats meant they were in effect banging a corner.

That's how we did it for casual 'rabbit starts' with no gate boat but back in the day you would have a gate boat and a guard boat protecting the pathfinder and, so the pathfinder didn't gain an advantage the gate boat continued on after the pathfinder was released to allow him to start correctly behind the gate boat. The RYA advice now says the pathfinder can tack rather than pass behind the gate boat which gives the pathfinder a few boat lengths advantage, when did that change?
