Ripcurl is owned by Kathmandu? Oh dear, there goes their cred.

It used to be said that the surfwear brands lived on their credibility among "real" surfers, who were the early adopters and gave the brand street cred. I wonder if that's still the case and whether bringing such brands into corporate ownership is their death knell, or whether they will keep on selling.  Kathmandu is notorious for selling the outdoors dream but being bought by people who would never dream of going for a hike that takes them any farther than the distance from their car to the shop, so maybe the once-iconic brands will remain successful under new ownership.

It's a bit sad in a way if image, rather than reality, can succeed to that extent.

Mount Gay Cowes Week baseball caps had a certain cachet in my youth

As for Rip Curl, or more specifically Billabong and QS, shame Graeme no longer posts - he’s have the inside track on how the company changed when Oaktree acquired the assets

Perhaps we should start a thread for apparel, sartorial feedback would be useful for the fashion conscious.

It's mainly a preppy kids brand here in Spain... plus some yummy mummies have the odd tote bag

I'm still getting over the trendiness of Australian surf wear in Europe, and the accompanying price tag.  I forgot my boardshorts when I packed for the Windsurfer LT worlds and just could not believe or bear to pay the price they were charging for Rip Curl etc at Lake Garda.

Having sailed on a North Sails team boat in my youth, and knowing how tight they were about giving away stuff even to their staff after winning nationals, it's pretty odd to see the brand become such a fashion icon among non-sailors.

It's a bit like my first trip to Europe, in the windsurfing boom, where every fourth person seemed to be wearing a particular T shirt emblazoned with "Windsurfing World Cup Hookipa Beach" on it. The fact that there had never been such an event was irrelevant as long as it had the magic words on it.

Meanwhile, real windsurfing world championship T-shirts were "souvenired" (ie stolen) almost off your backs at such a rate that the organisers had a special system to replace them.
