Or maybe you haven't had to try it yet! It really has been tried already ... It is easy enough to recover, particulary since it is relatively narrow. Even the most unathletic should be able to right it OK and if they cannot heave themselves directly over the gunwhale as it rights and/or rather than climb around they should easily enough enter via the (open) stern. This aspect of the Hybrid concept was tested in (last years) earlier version as well.

Gordon - Thank you for the very kind offer. I had a search this morning and have found a part-empty box with a few pairs remaining. Should be enough with a bit more care of them than usual to see through the next modifications ! Friday on-water session went well. Conditions were an occasionally gusty 10-14mph with some big shifts thrown in. They even caught out one Blaze who went in to windward on a beat. The additonal rake previously mentioned and the now slightly softer rigging tension worked well. Same pace as before but the rig felt 'happier' or a bit more forgiving / flexible. Generally the stalking horses had a slight edge upwind but were held in all condions by Hybrid offwind. The slight deficit was to be expected as they were mostly Blazes again and their leverage helped... Yes - I could have hiked harder but we'll soon see how effective that is after the side-deck mods planned for next week. (I like to be comfortable if I have to really work at it !) Last sail before the mods planned for next week and it might be useful to switch to / try out the slightly smaller 8.8m 'Fire' sail before any such changes.... It is about half a metre smaller as well as being flatter but fits the same spars / rake settings. If similar boats are also around tomorrow and the conditions are broadly similar to Friday it will be intersting to see the relative advantages / diasadvantages.

Looking good, a route avoiding racks suits my view of pretty, they always look like an afterthought to my eye. I like the notion of paring down sail area to extend the wind range.

Part of the attraction 'Hybrid' is the freedom to evolve a boat without the strictures of a CA and a rule book hovering in the background or any commercial pressure. As it is now it is both therapeutic and fun. While it still involves a bit of basic design at this stage it is now more about general problem solving and refinement... If I had time and financial pressures to 'finish' or meet a particular commercial deadline it would inevitably represent more pressure than fun really. The market is largely trashed for quite a while so there is no current rush at all.... As I've said already 'you never say no' but if it does develop in time to be 'tempting' that will be in part because I'm not tied to anyone’s programme or commercial agenda at this time. In other words the boat will be all the better for an atypical, much longer than normal, development period. I recognise this is an unusual luxury at a very unusual time. However if it goes in a non-commercial direction then that is fine as well.
Back to basics ... Another session on Friday afternoon planned today, again rig oriented. It really does like plenty of rake and it is proving very easy now to sail extremely high and a tad quicker than expected. But if you do 'foot off' a bit upwind the VMG is still v.good if not better... Nice to have both options on the water. Will also stick with the smaller centreboard for now. The size reduction tried last time had no -ve effects and some drag reduction will be in there... as will be a small weight cut. The other area of work being planned is a mod to the hiking part of the gunwhales...hinted at previously. They will be shaped to be better for hiking and the side deck extended / flared by 50-60mm each side in this area . The central spine of the boat makes a fantastic 'kick-bar' already but a little more width in the key upwind hiking area will compliment this to make for a very comfortable hiking position. It is an admission I think we are just about there with the initial rig and foils + general balance .. so now time to start considering 'comfort' and controls. So next week (after yet another session on Sunday) it will be time for a return to the workshop. Epoxy /Glass / Carbon and tad of marine ply and paint will be involved ... just hope I've got enough latex gloves left- you just can't buy them that easily at the moment...! Should be able to turn it around in 4-5 days with right prior planning and preparation ... |

I like both racing and just blasting (or drifting) around, it's nice to be on the water either way and they are quite different pursuits. I'm not sailing at the moment, my wife is 'highly vulnerable' so we are staying in. Thankfully I have other things to keep me occupied, one of which is boat bimbling so I'm mostly spending my time usefully.

I also like a bit of non racing sailing time. I wouldn't call it training as not that focussed, maybe a combination of play and practice. Simply about getting "into" the boat and how it feels in both light and blasting. I often find when racing I am inclined to get tight and try too hard, this playtime gets me feeling the boat when going sweetly balanced rather than being forced.

Yep, been taking a chance to do some training, amongst the aimless enjoyment of being afloat again. After all, most sports are more training than contest.
