Another stupid class rule and good reason not to use a Blaze, thanks for reminding me, I had a go in one at the weekend as part of my 'where do I go next?' end of season thinking, I expect it's the same with the Contender, no wonder the Phantom does so well.

Yes that's what we have on the Blaze, typically the lowers have a little slack to allow some bend before they become tight as we are not allowed to adjust them (or forestay/rig tension) while racing. We use kicker to depower upwind (actually the converse, we use no kicker upwind until we are overpowered) and the mainsheet to control leech tension. Offwind the kicker does the usual stuff, controlling leech tension/twist.

You could allow the top of the gnav strut to bend the mast, but normal practice seems to be to fit lowers which prevent this. It ties in with the rig concept of fixed bend in the bottom half, flexible at the top, as exemplified by various Bethwaite rigs and others.
Equally, you can have lowers with a string vang, like a typical Merlin.

Shame a gnav changes the bend characteristics of a mast, so adding one to a currently kickered boat isn't a good plan for speed. Could work for a cruising boat, though.

The gnav generally comes with lower shrouds, which I think takes us back to L4k and possibly other incidents.
I've known someone get their (long) hair caught in a cascade kicker when the helm released the kicker after a capsize.

Certainly makes more room for crew, looks like it could also have a safety benefit too.
