80 GP 14's at Mounts Bay, so not all events affected by distance and traffic.

Yes, there's a few. The graph I put on the other page is number of sailors, not boats, so obviously times three for the triple-handers.

Presumably mostly open keelboats?
XOD, SB3, Dragon, Etchells and many more.
A -Raters?
The odd 18ft skiff I suppose!

These things work quite well sometimes, because you can still race if one person fails to turn up, or you can sail with a third person learning on the job.

A single hander helm with 50% of weekends free for sailing could sail one weekend in two. Two people sailing a two hander each with 50% of weekends free, randomly selected, will only get to sail one in four..... Clearly it is harder to sail regularly with two than in a singlehander.......

You might conclude this is because more single-handed boats
have been launched and not totally screwed over by the PYAG than the new double handers.

I guess it's handy to have a one size fits all answer to any problems with dinghies and dinghy racing!

I cannot see any significant trend that suggests that all is healthy in the Singlehander Championship camp; what I see is that over 12 years the number of double handed class participants has dropped by 4000 amd the number of single handed class participants has dropped by 100, hardly a ringinging endorsement for either configuration ...

Also, surely they are connected to each other. A fall in doublehanders may in part be due to people deciding to get singlehanders to simplify their sailing.

Answering my own question, but seems there is evidence.

You might conclude this is because more single-handed boats have been launched and attendance has been maintained by new classes popping up and their marketing backing. However, Optimists, Moths, Blaze, Solo and Supernova all see on average 20 more sailors at their nationals now and none are new boats.

The ray of light for double handers is the success of fevas, 29ers and RS200s; popular youth / young adult boats.

29ers are at Hayling just now, they had karaoke last night and the social seemed very well attended. Judging by the terrible singing thre were many there who will fit in well with teh 200 fleet over the next 5-10 years!
