GCSE petition

   Commodore at my club sent me email regarding Education Dep't dropping sailing, wind surfing etc from the PE curriculum, please read and vote.
To all my sailing contacts:
Please support the petition below which asks that Sailing and Windsurfing be reinstated to the list of sports recognised as being suitable for coursework element of public examination in Physical Education. It will take only a minute of your time!    via this link. 

Sailing and windsurfing were removed from the list of acceptable sports for students of PE.  Although this is a minority sport, many keen sailor youngsters wanted to use this towards their PE qualification.  You can see the list of still acceptable sports and other information about this at PE Activities for GCSE.  

The main objection to sailing seems to be the difficulty of providing evidence of sailing skills.  But videos are acceptable and the onus is on the student to provide this evidence.  One has only to look at  Youtube to see that many people produce very good video of sailing with the small waterproof cameras that are now readily available.  I'm sure that many coaches already use these to provide their students with valuable feedback on their technique and would be more than happy to provide the requisite evidence.  

Apart from frustrating already keen young sailors, this policy may also discourage many who might have taken sailing more seriously if it had been available for their school PE qualifications.  It can have only a negative impact on our sport, by discouraging the very people we need and by making sailing appear not a mainstream sport.  

The RYA are trying to get sailing reinstated.  There is also a parliamentary petition you can support.  You can find it via this link.
