Portishead would sort the men from the boys.
It's handy for the M5.

ie Garda - Send it into the cliffs and tack below layling and get lifted up. Great for fast trapeeze boats, not so much for hiking or slow boats. Extreme example maybe....
Having sailed a hiking slow Solo at Riva Del Garda last week, despite having to head for the cliffs, there is nothing remotely boring about sailing in this spectacular venue, the grind upwind was a price to pay for the exilarating downwind legs in big waves and F4 - 5 winds, under the cliffs and blue skies.  One of my top three venues from over forty years of dinghy racing.  Cannot wait to return.

Did have a little giggle to myself about a Solo being exciting in just about any condition apart from perhaps riding a Tsunami with a Hurricane for company :-)

I love sailing in Garda, I have sailed there for prob 10-15 weeks in total. Sailed Melges, some fast hiking boats and trapeeze boats too which was awesome. However I have also sailed Finns there and it was painful upwind and dull downwind - not many overtaking lanes and the waves aren't that big (You will have loads more fun at HISC if you get 15-20kts!!). Turned the whole race into a procession. Will has tried to get me to come to Garda a few times, but it doesn't quite do it for me at the moment in a Solo.

Como however - that is amazing. 12-15kts and a few shifts in the middle of the lake, so you don't hit the cliffs and have a real race in just as beautiful surroundings. For an solo or something like that it would be ideal.

Felpham is a good place for a nats, but your quite exposed in a Southerly, as is Paignton, but a lovely bay.

I also did a 200 Nationals about 20 years ago off the beach in Weymouth with a huge marquee next to the Sealife center. That was epic - great socials and straight onto a great race course - Not such an unused venue but great to be straight out to the bay!

speed is about perception - if we're comparing abolsute speeds then I always remind people we all went faster pulling into the car park. LOL

A Solo feels faster downwind in a blow than maybe the GPS would confer, however that to me translated as good fun.  Short waterline length also makes it interesting in lumpy stuff.

I may be biased but Thornbury is nicer than Portishead. Nice camping fields, good bar and a cracking pub opposite the gate. What more could you ask for?

Saw Fishguard recently, would love to sail there. Even more remote, Crookhaven in the far SW of Ireland. Has a Volvo club of the year, even.

Thornbury and Portishead?! I mean... best unused championship venues? Really?

Hugely tidal so would make getting starts off quite hard. Also, I think a bit of tide is good at a nationals venue, but it becomes a bit much when it overides all other tactical considerations. Plus it just makes getting big fleets around a course difficult.

Doesn't the huge tidal range would restricts sailing time due to launching?

And the the water is brown.

Fishguard is a good shout. Should have a bit of tide, relatively exposed but could shelter a fleet behind a headland. Good launching. I'm surprised it doesn't host big events. I drove through last year, and it certainly didn't match the charm of Tenby which is a popular venue of the other side of Pembrokeshire.

Also there's Milford Haven... Dale YC? Does that host national championships?
