Just come from Grafham, I was very thorough, lifted the hull and hosed the Astroturf and everything.
But what about trollies with tubes that fill up, outboards, flooding rib hulls, flooding gunwales, inside centreboard cases etc. etc. Are we just prolonging the inevitable? What do Quagga mussels taste like with white wine & cream? (&frites) |

Well paid job, that - seagull feet cleaner. And just like any other job, you get shat on from above.

And who cleans off the feet of seagulls and cormorants that pick up the larvae to transport to wherever they fly?

So what happens when the chlorine solution used to wash the boats down gets into the lakes we are sailing on? The quantity being sprayed around if every boat had to wah down after a 30 boat open meeting, even, would surely be a problem? Mighy kill off the mussels, though...
And do we have to bring our own bleach? Sounds like a problem that clubs might need not only a lot of guideance, but practical help, too. I seem to remember driving through vats of something nasty to stop the spread of something a few years ago which closed several lakes for a while - maybe clubs need something along the lines of swimming pool foot washes, so boat comes out of lake on trolley then through the wash pool before being derigged. Though as Transient says, difficult to clean the whole thing after a capsize. |

Or less plankton for fish to eat, I think it's worth a try, purely for scientific reasons, I'll donate Redoubt lake...

If a boat has capsized is it possible to clean it thoroughly enough to kill all larvae?
I have my doubts. |

No, they don't kill fish. They swarm in vast clumps over anything underwater, like zebra mussels but worse. They significantly alter the ecosystem by hoovering up plankton, and the effects of that are always unpredictable, but less plankton might well mean more light for weed to grow.

So, what exactly do these things do? Do they kill fish? Thereby ridding us of the problems of fish murderers?
Where can I get some? |

Not just a hose Rupert, this is washdown with a chlorine solution to actively kill off the things.

How many clubs have a set up where washing down boats is actually possible without queuing up and waiting for the single hose (positioned where you can't get more than one boat close at a time) at the exact time where you are wanting to get packed away after a long day, with the organizers wanting to get on with dishing out the prizes, the showers going cold, etc, etc?
If stopping the spread of such things is so vital (which I'm sure it is) then clubs have to do their part too, and make it easy for competitors to wash boats (and trolleys) down. Otherwise, it ain't gonna happen. |
