Peaky- I can handle a 2k in a light-moderate breeze single handed. Given you're not likely to want to take the kiddies out in anything more than 3, as said above, you should be OK with one- and obviously you can gently up the maximum as the nippers become more adept at sail handling. If it does go over it is a little keen to invert, but it is pretty difficult to get it to go over in the first place.

Feva is nice, but not really a cruising boat - not too comfy inside.

Have you thought about an old GRP Gull, or even an Otter? There are some very cheap old GRP boats out there from when people didn't see the need to go too fast. More modern, you can probably get a Comet Zero fairly cheap. They are a bit tippier and a bit faster than the Mirror.

don't discount the miracle theres been quite a lot built in the last few years, the pink one has been for sail for ages. plus theres a compsite one 3676 for sail on apolloduck for £1195 not a bad boat for the money and only wooden decks to worry about

I loved my Icon, but am not sure its suitable for a 5 year old! Thanks for all the advice - I still can't decide but I think any of the aforementioned would do. I get the impression that the Feva is seen as more appropriate for two teens than a parent/young child(ren) combo, is that right?
Has anyone seen/sailed a Vibe?

Peaky, I sail a graduate with my 7 year old daughter as does Craiggo who also posts here.  They are fantastic little boats and with the new sale plan you can also get some enjoyment if you fancy the odd race.  They are very light, nimble things perfect for Father/Child crews. 

Who knows if you did get one, perhaps we could convince Craiggo to bring his to the forum regatta.  I smell a seperate fleet prize!!!

Hi Russ,

Am quite tempted by the Grad, but was disappointed to see that it won't be at Ali Pally. It seems that Rooster even offered a boat but no-one could be arsed to collect it or man the stand. Not sure that says much!

Not that I have any intention of doing any Open racing, but missing the Dinghy Show is not the sign of a healthy class, and I don't want to be lumbered with something I can't sell on unless its as cheap as chips.

there's two or three parent/child combos in fevas here at Hunts.  Where you would struggle is if you wanted to take both children out at once.  There isn't a lot of space in them.  Two of the parent/child combos are instructors and they get on with the boats really well and rate them pretty highly.

I have sailed a Vibe.....itr seemd as bad as a Magno.

The 2000 is a great boat, a bit heavy onshore on your own but a jockey wheel soon fixes that.  The grad is also a great boat, but again ideal for dad plus one but not dad plus two.

edited to say why the 2000 is a great boat: easy to reef, spacious, relatively stable, easy to maintain, pretty vice free.  Do use a mast head float though - they invert quickly if they go over, that would be my main concern in your position.

Sailing with kids that age you want a boat whereby they will be sitting in the boat rather than on the side. The Feva isn't the boat for cruising, your kids will end up with a wet bottom sitting in the boat. I have sailed a Mirror with 2 8 year olds, it's a great start to sailing and easy enough for them to handle having a go at helping, however getting them to tack with you holding the main sheet involves a bit of limbo!

That was one of the primary reasons I got an Albacore.
 
I also added that it needs to be light enough to be man-handled by me on my own, but also able to take the weight of a heavy dad at the back. The Albacore turned out to offer the weight carrying ability in a much lighter hull than the modern thermoplastics or 2000.
