Love that tradition, no clubhouse? Toughened up in the Raj eh'.

Euros? Modern tinge, like it. Only thirty of the buggers, club for distressed gentlefolk obviously.

In Euros because in Ireland.

I'm pretty sure you are right, that there are far more likely to be poor posh folk there than at a big brazen YC with all the bells and whstles - they are for new money, no class needed.

I must tell you all in advance......that we are off to Venice again next month, but, only because I am a kind husband who wishes to treat his wife. I promise not to enjoy my self.

take your wellies, and I hope you're not one of those cheap skate tourists who takes the bus in, there's only one way to arrive in Venice, so pack a buoyancy aid too.

a city built on stilts on the water, and you'd choose to travel underground in a tunnel like the common rat?

I've come to believe that the greater the emphasis on amateur sailing (and especially if the word corinthian is involved), then the further "up" the social scale the club is positioned.

Like all the Royal Clubs (including the RNLI) in Ireland we were founded before we managed to throw of the yoke of 800 years of oppression!

All members of the club are also members of other clubs - some of which are very expensive if not necessarily posh.

New money - now there is a give away phrase revealing a distaste for social mobility! Most of the "old money" left here in 1922, so you could say anyone able to afford yachy club fees in Ireland comes from "new money".

This thread is wonderful for being able to include phases never normally used on here. I was especially please with managing to get "new money" in there!

new money buys a brand new 10 grand Phantom

old money lovingly restores a vintage Finn with 10 grand

both are for fat cats according to the lefties (and Grumpf)
