We have plenty of wind right now, but in summer it's typically from the south west with sea breezes on sunny afternoons. To be honest, I would say England in general isn't a windy place compared to say Australia. Someone out there will know(and probably shoot me down in flames!) but I would guess our average summer winds are between force 2 and 4. Looking back, I don't often sail in a flat calm or survival conditions in summer. BTW, You can say on Hayling (as it's an Island), or in Hayling, take your pick! |

It's amazing how far behind you get if you don't log on every day, you see a post you want to reply to, and it's 4 pages back!! This topic wasn't even started last time I logged in, and last time I replied to Spot about wind in Germany, and I have no idea where that subject is.

I went to Tarifa windsurfing, and found a language school (there's no wind in the mornings, and I like languages) and learned Spanish from a woman who only spoke Spanish, in a class of Germans and Swiss, so we all spoke Spanish. Did 4 weeks, came back to England, and joined year 3 of a 3 year O level course. After a couple of weeks I gave up on it and moved into the A level class- they all knew move vocabulary than me, but nobody could actually speak the language like I could! We all try and learn in English, and it doesn't work..Biggest problem has been practising since I did the exam. Anywhere in Europe you can see English language films, and hear music in English, but over here what little there is, is divided between the various other languages (i.e. French German Spanish), so unless you travel regularly you loose it! I did get a Spanish girlfriend for a while, that helped!

Live in the language, day in, day out... that's the only way to grasp a language (even imperfectly, trust me, I've been trying for 15 years!!) Have you noticed, all polyglots out there, how unsettling it is the first time you DREAM in a foreign language?? Or is is just me... |
