Had a good sail on Sat with a few other boats round the Island! It was my first time and was an epic spectacle.

14th out of 31 finishers, 45 entrants in the Monohull division. Admittedly last of the fasts, but the swimming escapade thanks to a gybe drop gone wrong didn't help.
It was superb fun seeing just what the boat can do on a big race course. We had a few rather juddering landings off the front of some oif the chop (though not properly airborne). Two sail fetching along the outside of Sheppey was rapid- at some points the spray was painful as it hit that hard. Final legs (course marks: Medway Noumber 5, West Shoebury, Finish at the end of the pier east-west) didn't feel so great, pretty sure tide was slack, but we made slow progress across the estuary and slogged somewhat up to the line. Notice that there's now apology over the start timing- things seemed to go haywire, and I think in the end we all rather started by consensus... |

I did the medway marathon at the weekend.
Brilliant event crewing a 3000, light at the start but once we got out past the forts we had a perfect 4/5. Overall 4th place out of 47 boats and in our fleet second boat behind our very own Medway Maniac. Dan |

Medway Yacht Club's Marathon was indeed the best for years. Mostly reaching, mostly planing, as evidenced by the winning 800's 2hr13 elapsed time (for 26 miles!). Too bad the over-the-top weather and forecast on Saturday appear to have put a lot of people off. By Sunday morning they'd revised the forecast down to a nice 14mph gusting 20, but that came too late for most, apparently. Just goes to show, don't trust the forecast in the days before - go along and trust your eyes! |

The Medway Marathon is a great event but we went swimming
twice which rather spoilt out chances on this occasion. The wind was up in the 4-5s but full of holes and being a northerly provided plenty of reaches, the water was flat. The first capsize was an elementary mistake of tripping over the rack as the boat accelerated away when the kite filled. The second was a due to a small cruiser appearing to leeward leaving us nowhere to go when struck by a gust. It was good but cold. 24th out of about 40 odd. Such a good event deserves more boats. |

Medway Marathon It was won by a RS800 which covered the 26 odd miles in about 2 hours 15 minutes. Even we did it in 2:45 including 2 capsises.

If you want us to do a survey, ASK.
We can't get a lot more green, we use the wind. |
