Good stuff, we'd get a few 18s turning out to race a few GP14s, could make interesting TV

Who says the 470 is going to be dropped anyway? It's an established Olympic class, which fills the Men's and Women's double-hander slot perfectly, and in Olympic circles that counts for a lot - they are unlikely to make changes just for the sake of it. If the 470 (men) was changed for the 505 or FD, you would immediately make it harder for less developed countries to compete (rich countries would spend lots of cash getting the most out of the new boat, as GBR did with the Yngling), you would increase the crew weight needed (great for fat Europeans/N Americans, bad for Asia etc), and you'd need to find a new boat for the woman to sail. Everything points to the 470 staying in place for a good while yet! |

It was dinghysolutions who brought the subject up a bout the FD replacing the 470, and I've heard mutterings before about it. And in general terms, the 505 seems a cheaper boat than the 470 for the average sailor to sail.

Maybe it was a conspiracy to get us thinking about FDs again, doesn't matter anyway, I still think the 505 is the best out of the lot of them! |

505s are brilliant to sail, so are 470s but it has to be a litlle bit windier to appreciate the 470 as much as the 505.

I don't think you can say that a 505 campain would be cheaper than a 470 one. A top of the range 505 costs around £13,000 (for a Van munster). However, because of the epoxy/kevlar hulls, they are still competitive after 15 season, unlike the 470's which go bendy after 1-2 years.
