Had the Hangover from Hell on Sunday following the annual Lord
Taverners Ball. Came very close to not racing, but then it's the law, 'if
you can't party til you puke and still win the first race the next day' it
means your done, so onto the start line I went.

Started with the slow handicap and pulled away and settled in to enjoy
a freshening 2 fairly flat water and an easy sail which was about all I
could cope with. The Hangover being one of those ones that creep up
and get worse as the day progressed, liberating the Champagne Bottle
for strictly personal consumption now seemed not the great idea it had
been at the time.

A fairly uneventful couple of laps passed until I noticed the 505
approaching from the Starboard wing, on Starboard and it was a
Starboard hand course. I knew it would be tedious, I knew whatever I
did would be wrong, but I left plenty of room, over stood, hoping
they'd tack to lee bow and round ahead of me in the massive gap I'd
left.
But no, what is it with muppets that once on Starboard, a) they have to
shout it at you. b) Stick it by sailing right across and going too far in
this instance then c) Tack back and sail over you again which in this
instance forced me onto the mark in the negative tide whilst remarking
ooh looks like a touch there..

Never mind the windward boat keeping clear, leaving water for me to
round or just general courtesy that one ought to have to a slower boat
when you have all the canvas to blanket them with... feckers.

I should have protested the b'stards..

Quite ruined my day, as well as knicking the race off me..

So, to read between the lines... you're officially 'done' then?!

and I bet they were not even in the same fleet as you.....

I hate Starboard WW mark rounding. What I tend to do if approaching on port is leave plenty of room for them to sail their proper course. If they don't then you can argue that they sailed in an unsportsmanlike manner. The other tirck is to ensure you are keeping clear, they can then not tack and must pass across your bow or astern of you before tacking.

The other good move is to approach in starboard and then when they shout 'don;t tack there' just slow down and force them to tack away.. works really well and means they give you more room in future...

Either that or just say stuff them and try to sail your own race and drown your sorrows in the bar afterwarss thinking what might have been......

Well you have to factor in the 'exactly because it is me they're stuffing' but it
is a wind up when I'd gone for a text book approach and had an opponent in
a similar class or had it been me in their situation, a tack to lee bow gets it
every time.

Had they been of similar sail size they'd have been stuffed doing what they
did. As it was if the racing was of a more serious nature then they'd have
been off to the protest room with bob & no hope for company..

The thing that really winds me up in retrospect, I even did turns cos it's my
way.. and I'm stupid, living in a past world of rule observance.

as you say GRF, they know it's you so they're probably having a go and expect something similarly low from your good self, so here's me top suggestion, next time: line up on port as usual, but instead of being nice and thoughtful, just carry on, ignoring the ever more frantic "STARBOARD" shouts by studiously studying your rig, control lines, mark layline or just shutting your eyes, frankly anything that is avoiding eye-contact with the now panicing (and probably swearing mightily) 5o before cackling (evil cackle optional) as they tea bag the crew in desperate last-minute avoidance mode...

or just ignore 'em....

ps. the above appears to work just fine for about 9 out of 10 Wayfarer racers I've come across in handicap events over the years....

Great day at Bough Beech yesterday for the classic event. Bit to breezy for my 1953 Hornet which sprung a panel but well organised and friendly day. Now back to the shed for a serious overhaul.

Nore race today. Some epic reaching- three sails most of the way along the Essex side, two sails and flying along the coast of Sheppey. Nice. One swim. Legs sore now. Had a long walk in. Then back out, with trolley. Then back in with the boat.

Fathers Day, had all the daughters of darkness plaguing me, wish I'd ditched
them for a sail now, wasn't long before they were all bitching at each other..
Have to wait til Thursday now.
