Well bootscooter the first thing that springs to mind is to get the bottom bracket shell chased and faced, especially if you are using an external BB system. Integrated headsets have taken most of the pain out of headset installation but you may still need the crown race battered on (unless the headset has a handy split crown, in which case it should just slip on with gentle encouragement. Use appropriate greases, ie copper grease on the BB threads etc. and also the seatpost if it is alloy. Various specialist greases are available for carbon and titanium.
And don't overtighten clamps. Especially around carbon bars etc. Keep an eye out for any sharp corners that might damage whatever they are clamped around.

Since I don't think your build is quite like this guy's

I suggest you pick a route that's fairly flat!

As for training...  other than saddle soreness (and Assos chamois creme in a good pair of padded shorts sorts that), one of the biggest things I struggled with was refuelling.  ie eating enough during the ride.  Unless you are a timetrialling super hero, a 100 miles can take upwards of 6 hours of pedalling assuming it isn't entirely flat and over that time and distance one can bun off maybe 5,000 calories...  That's a lot of sports drink, gels etc and they are an acquired taste!

My training has always been the same - I commute to work by bike 3-4 times a week, 18 miles each way across London on a single speed road bike...  Other than when taking part in events, I have done very few rides over 20 miles!

Thanks for all that.  Been chatting to some bike-racing mates, and I think I've decided to let the local bike shop fit the bottom bracket and headset, just for peace of mind. Tub of copperslip is sat waiting in the shed for the build to begin, but I've got to polish and laquer the frame first.

I am very lucky in the fact that my girlfriends father used to own a bike shop so has ALL the kit. It's amazing that he has a tool for just about everything. Where I have a crank brothers multi tool, an adjustable spanner and a hammer, he has a specific tool for every job. We changed the headset on my mountain bike the other week and with all the correct tools it was easy. I'd have been screwed trying to do it myself without damaging either the headset or the bike!

When are we going to start seeing some build pics?!

I'll bang up a pic of all the bits bought so far tomorrow.  Costs so far are about 460.00 pounds, but that includes thinks such as SPDs, bar tape, top notch tyres and everything.  All I've got left to buy is seat post and seat (I think), and I'll prob do that at LBS to make sure I get it right.  Components as I've said are all Campag (various ranges) in 10-speed.

Good quality rim tape is also a must. Nothing worse than a puncture when you have your ear right next to the wheel in question.
