But actually, 'vang' is a very general term. People really mean 'boom vang'.

Just one of the Americanisms we've adopted, like hiking, etc.

So, could we not just say "kicker", "vang" sounds so ausso/seppo and it
doesn't really mean the same, they never get it right, crims & colonials.

As for the request for longboard info, forget it, it was part of history, gone
now forever.

And Guest#260, I've been trying to work out which one of the inbred
whitstabulians it might be. Got the story wrong or combined two, the one
where a mate slid the kickstart down his trouser leg and fell off at the lights,
with my old harley who's gear box blew up and trashed my ankle thirteen
year since - good memory - then I suppose coming from whitstable and
using both your heads it must be easy.

As one of the people who was sailing the said Laser 4000, I'd just like to pint out that the dagger board was broken in a totally unrelated accident. The board had previously been repaired and snapped whilst righting from a capsize. Broken piece placed in buoyancy aid and sailing resumed.

As to dropping thew main and holding boat head to wind, the words "are u mad" spring to mind. Landing at Hythe is a mission in these conditions; only way in is at full chat. Boat was being sailed by two experienced Senior Instructors.

P.S. Did I mention that Grame went sailing the other week with his bung out!!

Might explain his weather helm problem!

Those who can, do....

What's bad/mad about dropping the main and sailing in under jib or poles?

Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and
oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital
ingredient in beer.

You need to come in to Hythe at full pace or you will get rolled on the beach (which is pretty bad and you would be mad to do it if you could avoid it!)

Following on from fellow Hythe shingle jockey Graemef, what's the gen concensus on the Vago. Looking to change from Supernova to 2 hander for me and competant 9 year old son (happily trapezing in a 420 in F3+). Good performance but not too scary. L3000 ok but seems a bit slow in lighter conditions and cramped. Vago ideal on paper - robust and progressive rig but reviews vary from crap to fantastic. Buzz/RS500 possibly?

Hey John, congratulations.

(That's about his 4th in the Radial worlds, not an attempt to be a smarty about his beach - landing technique).

Hey there nice to hear from a fellow hythe sailors, when the crew jumps out and swims with the boat by the nose it acts like a sea anchor and prevents the boat turning side on and being rolled by the waves. If this doesnt work at hythe then fair enough I was simply passing on info, and as them being experienced Si's that doesnt always say much for their high performance background as being an Si I have worked with many different Si's and not many of them come from a performance background!
Any one in need of quality carbon fibre work (tillers etc) at decent prices!

Agreed ... you get rolled when you go side on - I'd suggest the main down technique is the best option combined with lots of mates on the beach to grab the boat and carry it out ASAP.
