Well I managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory again this
sunday.

Had a cracking start was several boat lengths clear rising to half the first
reach and managed to chuck it all away with a mixture of unlucky shift,
then incompetant boat handling, then rant fest, then blame everything
else but me of course.

The wind did up a knotch and I am having trouble getting Frank upwind
once over powered which comes above 10 knots. Stuff it and he makes
leeway because of the pathetically small plate, and finding the 'groove' to
sail free sheeted out is very difficult in the choppy knocking waves, and
offwind I'm becoming increasingly irritated with that slab nose as it stops
many a good surf getting itself blunted into the next wave and not riding
up and over.

A Bad day..

Think I might revert it back to centre sheeting, one of my problems
coming from dropping the main sheet during a tack ffs that's a first.

Grumpf, you need to move your weight fore and aft more as you move over the waves to promote surfing then as you surf, move the weight back and keep the bow out of the next wave.

Also pulling some outhall on will help with upwind performance

You forgot to add i beat you in a Supernova .

Did a spot of big boat racing this weekend at the Portishead Holms Race in a Hanse 300. A race starting just outside Portishead Marina down to Flatholm across to Steepholm and then back up to Portishead. We had a 2.5hr upwind slog to the islands with just about every conceivable upwind sail selection used, one knockdown by a rogue wave just as we were about to bear away to dip behind a 50 odd footer. Downwind with the incoming tide the apparent wind dropped to a 4-5 so full main and kite up, serious surfing down the waves, but Hanse 300s are not beamy enough for these conditions and if you dont set-up for the wave thats about to catch the quarter it'll spin you out. Unfortunately a mile or so from the finish one such wave span us out, even with the sheet eased and kite flogging we were unable to bear away again, so kite down, re-pack and ready for another go, by which time with tide and plenty of pace through the water we were within 200m of the line, and with the kite only giving us a couple of extra knots it wasnt worth it. Awesome race and currently provisionally 3rd out of 58, although there are re-calcs going on that might see us switch places with the Grand Soleil 40.

Saturday I was coaching the swanage laser fleet.  With both myself and the group realising just how much work was needed, they seemed extremely keen for me to do a few more days.  I had a really good day, I quite enjoy coaching.

Sunday I was stuck in a field in the morning and so missed the morning race....wasn't too pleased.  However, I still had a good 2+1/2 hour training session though still not happy with my tacking.  It's not consistent enough.
Oh well, another weekend gone and twitchy to get back on the water!

you bottled it..

It was irritating you being at definitely the right place for all the wrong
reasons (out to sea in an unfavorable tide)when the stronger SW wind
filled in and I was stuffed up the coast.

I was mentally deranged when having crossed you on Port despite your
whining, hailing whaling and blubbering only to drop the fecking
mainsheet miss the mark lock into irons proceed twenty boat lengths
back downwind and tide backwards have a bit of a discussion with myself
and the boat in which strong language might have been used, only to do
the self same thing next time round..

You on the other hand did well, obviously you've found your perfect
match. Dan Dan the Supernova man has so much better a ring to it than
Demolition Dan don't you think?

Did you win it?

Oh and you don't have to tell me how to surf waves, I was back on the
label and it still didn't keep the nose up..

Great sailing conditions at Royal Lymington's Autumn dinghy regatta this weekend for Cherubs, Merlins, Scorpions, Lasers, PY.

Blue skies & 13-16 knots both days, gusty up to 21kn, wind against tide with choppy wobbly water offshore.

A frustrating day at Hunts, I think I should have stayed at home.

Race one, was in 2nd and manged to backward roll out of the boat because I have forgotten to lock my back foot under the toestrap as I rounded up (I got several cheers from the people beind me).

Race 2 (fleet race) had a reasonable start, led from start to finsh but the wind was awful (a northerly is never good at Hunts with all the tress along the north bank).

Race 3 forgot to start the watch, missed starting it for all the rest of warning so was late at the start and at the wrong end! Managed to drag myself up to 2nd at the windward mark and proceeded to chase down the leader just caught him and the decided to test the water again on the run. Got the thing back upright and sailed to the finish, almost caught the guy at the front (needed another lap I reckon).

Still think i should have stayed at home though! Roll on the 8.1 nationals!

Brilliant weekend at Kielder Open, sunshine and force 3 - very pleasant and better than forecast.

What a tonic after a not so good couple of months!

I had one of those bonus sails, where I wasn't expecting to sail but did and had a great time. I have wide wings on the boat now but no corrector weight (3kg) so I was going to stay at home, but the wind was more than forecast so I went up, with the intention of racing but retiring as I was technically out of class. As it happens, no-one cared about the weight so my results stood!

Just on the subject of the corrector, that has to be the least satisfying boat purchase ever, even worse than paying for insurance! I bought a second hand weight but even so after buying the weight, fitting kit and paying postage I've spent over £40 just to go slower....
