Yes, but sail numbers don't always track the number of boats build in SMOD classes ...

I am sure the L2 was numerous but 10000+?

According to the CA, the first L2 sold was numbered 450 (in 1979), @10500 was the first boat sold in 2000. I don't suppose they'll have sold that many since but it still adds up to 10k+ boats worldwide.

Assuming no gaps in the middle ...

Apparently none between 1979 and 2000 https://www.laser2sailing.org.uk/sites/laser2sailing.org.uk/files/documents/NumbersAndTips.pdf

The Ent is in the mid 23000s though and has only being around 60 years to the L2s 40.....

If all the boats represented by all the manufactures classes sail numbers existed then there would be thousands of boats around; ask yourself where are they all?

I don't think that many boats have gone in the landfill so where are they all?

Also - some manufactures started allocating sail numbers to sails not boats so when you bought a new set of sails you got a new number; I can see the logic, it is a sail number.

Anyway back on topic; so the Ent is in demise and the Tasar on the up?

The Tasar worlds are coming to the UK in the near future, that has had an effect on active numbers.

Yes, no doubt shakes a few sleepers out of the woodwork.

Of course the fact that it is an International class and not just a UK class give it this advantage, plus if you fancy a long haul championship trip you have that option.

The Enterprise is an International class too, and it's only the last two years that the Tasar has had more boats at it's Nationals. Tasar sail numbers started at 250 in 1976 and have only just reached 3000 worldwide. They don't generate as many races in the PY returns either by a large margin.

Yeah, guess so. I don't really see the Ent as an International class as it only seems to exits in former commonwealth countries but it is on the WS list; along with the GP14  Confused

I think there used to be quite a few in Auz, US and Canada but I can't find a recent Worlds result table to see if that's still the case. Definitely a well established International class though.

This Enterprise/Tasar comparison very similar to Laser/Aero comparison, Enterprise association largest 2 hander in the World, how many members does Tasar association have ?
Their are a lot of talk up posts but no substance when you look into it.
