Well Matt Venables actually did the 200s rather than the 29ers so it wasn't one way traffic, We were at Abersoch the week before for Dinghy Week (22 200s), but were in the majority that elected not to stay on. I sail with my wife and her view is that the Nationals are too serious. So we paid slightly less money to go hunting round the bay looking for buoys that all look the same rather than a clearly defined championship course. Not sure we made the right decision. Even though we are based in the Manchester area, it takes us almost three hours to get to Abersoch, so I can relate to why some people thought it was just too far. As you say, the sailing this week looked awesome. It was pretty good the previous week as well. Certainly had pangs of jealousy this week and would much rather have been there rather than in work.

One tip tick, I tried to search byte sailing in face book and there are several pages. However you need a Facebook group. A group is superior to a page in that it allows me meters to contribute properly and notifies people of new content. A page has to be searched.

I know this Null......the present page is crap..only I contribute! A new page is under construction but not by me unfortunately. We need to link between website, facebook and instagram. I do not understand twitter though I have an account. According to Mark (Jardine) over 700 people read my Nationals report. " Small people of the World unite, get out and sail a Byte".

I think a lot of people are making the same decision. Just off to the 4 nationals in Tenby tomorrow. Looking forward to it massively, but I think relentless windward leewards might put a lot of people off. Maybe the time has come to make these events more like Fed/Camel/Poole Weeks. Bit of crazy rnd the cans mixed with a bit of W/L, a mix of 1/2 race days, and defo a lay day to go out with the family! The Elites won't like it, but a truer test of all round sailing ability. |

I guess that it is up to the classes to have a set up that suits their membership, I have done a few Solo Championships in recent years, and the two off one hour race format per day works pretty well for me ... Salcombe, Bass, Chi and Poole Weeks all offer something for the non-championship sailor.
To be fair, I have grown to look forward to championship sailing, there is a definite science to it, which is different to sailing in a tidal estuary with variable wind and tidal conditions.

The SigneT class has integrated it's nationals into Brightlingsea's Pyefleet week, a format others should consider.

When we had Nationals as part of Sailfest at WPNSA it was a great success, less so the following year at Calshot. Unfortunately Sailfest is struggling now....but that is another matter.

A national championships should be a "serious" event ... it is a nationals the clue is in the name. No reason why it should not be fun but don't dumb it down. If you want a fun sailing week there is no shortage of great family sailing weeks around the UK but lets not start messing about with championships.

The original quote was mine, not Oinks. We made our decision to do Abersoch Dinghy Week because it was more relaxed and we had plenty of time to recover from the night before. I do however have to accept from a sailing perspective, the nationals the folowing week would have been better. I'm not for one minute suggesting that the Nationals should change. It might not have been a great Nationals numbers wise this year, but it looks like the sailing was absolutely awesome. At the end of the day, most classes would love to have had 76 boats on the water for their champs, so the 200s are definitely doing something right.

it seems to rely on a reasonably strong fleet utilising it for its nationals imho..... the event would have been absolute pony without the D-Zeros filling in for the exodus from the Byte brigade.
