man caves are the future for sanity... I plan to spend some time tomorrow in mine 'sorting out'* my sailing kit  whilst Peppa Pig is on repeat in the living room.  


* a process that involves moving summer rash vests and slipper style booties into one bag, whilst removing polypro and 6mm boots from another.  It can take a while...

You could practice your "handicap racing is bollox" mantra on your guests during canapes. Hopefully, it will have the desired effect and they will have made their excuses and fecked off before the cheeseboard comes out, leaving you time to get down the Club and enjoy the gale.

Handicap racing is still b**locks Duncan... I don't intend to look at the handicap for the new Phantom, nor will I bother looking too closely to the handicap results sheet- I will simply sail against those who happen to be around me and smile.

As an aside, I do acknowledge that maybe the turnouts at my current club might bias my perception of handicap racing, and perhaps there's a disjoint there somewhere... any move to a new club would be with an open mind for wherever and whatever sailing adventures life offers- and healthy respect for anyone else out there enjoying some competitive spirit. 

Our futures can be what we want them to be, not where the past defines us.  With that in mind maybe there is something rosy for the 4000 just around the corner?  Who knows... we'll wait and see, but probably has about as much chance as the new Phantom seeing out two seasons without a new owner  LOL

I do think your doing the right thing changing club. Draycote is a great place for class racing, but it's no place to be handicap racing for a number of reasons. I don't know Oxford that well, but think it should suit you better than banbury.
A change is as good as a rest, as they say. As you well know LOL.
Hope the change of boat and club keeps your mojo up Smile and I am glad your not looking at the phantom as a long term boat. As I still need you to buy a new rs50 or a punk, so I can buy it 18 months later. Wink LOL

I like the idea of bringing the 4000 back. Plenty around and a bit less athletic than a 29er. Maybe Rooster can consider some upgrades like ditch the weight equalization racks in favour of max width fixed ones (save a bit of weight and cost), a new mainsail design to bring the look up to date and maybe squeeze a bit more out of the boat, and also have a look to see if there are any places that the cost can be squeezed without losing quality (I see that RS have a new rudder stock that is way cheaper than the old one, plus you could use 29er or similar blades?) Make the sailmaker open choice but limited in materials (no 3DL etc) to encourage better sails and lower costs.

Rooster should consider buying up and re-furbishing older boats to kick start things too? I see Steve is doing that with the Dinghy Show boat...

Hi Yellow
If your going for a new Phantom and you did not like the boat before, was it because of kneeling downwind?
If so have a look at a Boon version with thwart/ track like a finn.
Great to sit on downwind saves your knees.
I am sure Ovington will make you a pink boat as that seems to be your choice!

I hope you don't have to kneel in a Phantom. Kneeling in any boat has to be the last worst resort and knee pads do little more than make a bad situation a little more comfortable..
Apart from the pain, there's the lack of feeling and worst of all the immobility; soldiers initially put prisoners in the kneeling position for the very reason it's impossible to do anything quickly from there.
Only crewed a 4000 once, I guess there no kneeling required as hopefully you'd be wiring and hiking off wind.

try pulling a 4-tonner up a steep slipway or sandy beach, you'll be on your knees then man
