Look around your local bike shops. Or ask friends. I picked up a carrera kraken (don't mock guys its a great entry bike) for £30 off a friend. Spent a few hours and some money on new parts. Now its a great little bike. Only thing is im now tempted to sell and get an upgrade.

Unrelated, what is the difference between road and MB clip in pedals? Are they really work it? Chainreactions have the shimano M520 pedals with cleats for £18.??, free delivery. I have seen them advertised as both road and MTB seperately. Whats the difference? I like the idea of having a set on my road bike and one on my MTB without having to change the cleats all the time.

I only use clipless pedals on my road bike, but the difference is huge, power
through the entire revolution, and it doesn't fatigue you twice as much as it
works different muscle groups on the way up, roadie pedals are more
precise like most roadie components as they dont have to deal with mud, i
wouldnt want to use the same on both types of terrain, same for the shoes,
roadie ones in mud would be a disaster, and mtb ones on a road bike would
make you look stupid, even more than being lycra clad

I only use spd's. It makes things so much better. Have a set of spd
peddles on my road bike too as I didn't want to buy a second set of
shoes at close to a hundred quid. On a 300 quid roadbike that only
gets used for training and commuting. Most my riding is propped xc
stuff or trail centres on my stumpy ht.

What is the difference between MTB shoes and road shoes? What is the actual difference between road and MTB pedals? Surely clipless pedals are just normal flat pedals?

I can't afford to buy 2 sets of shoes and pedals. Why would MTB shoes look stupid on a roadie? Whats wrong with SPDs? I think the pedals I was looking at were the M520 SPDs. Am I going to notice any real difference, my pedals at the moment have little plastic toe hook type things on.

Clipless pedals are what you describe as clip in, they are confusingly called clipless as they were a move away from the dangerous toe clip pedals of the past, road shoes are sleek and have no grip whatsoever and aren't
great for walking in, and mtb ones have a proper sole so you can handle the mud, and would look out of place on a road bike as they resemble hiking boots, road shoes also often have holes in the bottom for cooling
airflow which isnt good in wet muddy conditions for obvious reasons

not all mtb shoes look like hiking boots.

i use time atac pedals with road type shoes.

you can get similar road type shoes for spd pedals.

I use eggbeater pedals ( you get 4 ways per rotation to get them in ), good for muddy and road use, and shimano MTB style shoes with recessed cleats, so you can actually walk in them without looking like a dork.( they look like normal trainer shoes, but have a stiff sole with the cleats above the tread level)

These are MTB pedals:

SPD:

Eggbeater:

Time:

The above are all technically mtb pedals. Double sided for ease of entry, big open spaces to stop mud build up ruining the action of clipping in or out. These are all perfectly acceptable to use on a roadbike. As are mtb shoes and baggies!

These are road pedals:

Shimano:

Look:

Only one sided, lighter and have bigger cleats that spread the load out across the base of your foot. Coupled with stiffer shoes in general people reckon these transfer power more efficiently.

Now i'm no road cyclist but as Stu says i have SPDS on all my bikes so i can grab whichever shoes i fancy wearing (dry/clean) on any bike and know they will work. I have never experienced the hot aches some people reckon you get from the small contact point of SPDS on road bikes (more constant pedalling than MTB'ing) so will probably stick with what I'm doing. My MTB shoes are probably stiffer than most though.
