I dunno- almost seems a shame it's on there tbh....

You don't have to use it do you?  Just leave it as you might jib track sliders.

you do if it makes the kind of performance difference Mike's suggesting....  anyway, consensus appears to be it is at least 'useful clutter', but I can't help but think it would be highly annoying sailing with one with a novice or timid crew...

It's really not difficult.  Don't pull it upwind, pull it fully on downwind and somewhere in between when somewhere in between.  There's no load in it (just the elastic it pulls against), so a 5 year old is more than strong enough.

So you were bothered about the racing result when you took totty out?  I misunderstood your "sit here, pull this' comment, then.

I had never used any kind of jib stick of jib pole, dangly or otherwise.

When O crewed 'da yoof' who has some N12 experience gave me a quick 101 and it was easy enough to tell when you had it right and had it wrong.

I then had a crew who had never used a jib pole and had not sailed for 6 years. He got the hang of it pretty quickly too.

As others have said if you are just sailing around then there really is no need to use it but it makes a massive difference when you do even if you don't get it quite right.

I've never been that bothered about the racing result ever.... but getting a smile out of someone is a good start to a decent end result in so much in life.

I take Toby's point though, maybe it's easier to use than I'm giving it credit for, but either way, given a choice if I were buying a two-sail 'simple' boat, I wouldn't want the fuss of another spar to think about.... if I wanted another spar, with simple operation, then it might as well have a kite on it too.

Hey look, a Laser II was a veritable upgrade on getting a girl to go legs akimbo around the foredeck of a standard Laser.... they never did like sitting in the wet patch.

My concern is that it's going to rattle about and make a noise, disturbing my karma..

I figured going upwind it's going to be a pain and it would get used on the sausage downwind leg and that's it, it can't be any use at any other angle shirley?

Just take the slack out going upwind if you want to. It never made much noise that I noticed.

You do need to use it on the reach too, it makes a really big difference getting the jib to set (almost) right.
