I'll second that. Exactly what I told Oldarn that face-to-face, in fact, not least because using a gnav implies using a heavy ali boom if costs are to be kept in check, and the Alto boom is big and heavy.

But our local Alto crew says she values her gnav and wouldn't want to lose it.

I said that very same thing to him shortly after I stifled the urge to get up and floor him after his 'you let the other Alto beat you quip' Wink when I think of the crap I've had to take over the frikking thing.. Confused

I wondered about a system like the 100/300 roller only the other way round with the roller on the boom.

If I keep it that is, right now, the urge to dump it on ebay is still very strong.

Anyone interested in an ongoing Alto project pm me, right now you can have it for a song.. Angry

Same on the 3000, my crew misses the V3k's gnav on the L3k we're currently sailing.

As a helm, however, I prefer the lack of friction of a conventional kicker and also the more controlled mast bend it introduces. A gnav not only pushes the mast forward at the top end - controllable with lowers - but it also pulls the mast back at the gooseneck which strictly speaking requires control by a puller fixed on the foredeck, which you don't want because it interferes with tacking the jib, the asy. pole, crew play-pen etc.)

Having played with a self-disappearing kicker (don't ask), the solution I'm trialling a present is quick-adjustment of the kicker attachment point on the boom. Basically, move the boom-slide between a forward, light airs position and an aft, windy position; fix it with a fast-pin; set it before you go sailing for the wind on the day; simples. In practice, we found yesterday - as often - that we had light airs near the club, windy downstream and the slide wouldn't slide happily when out on the water. More thought required. (And yes, you will break the gooseneck if you leave the slide forward and whack on the loads...)

Seems strange to me that a big boat with plenty of space and complete with a carbon mast should be set up with an Ali boom and a tiny gnav like that any way  Confused

Had a much better day today, I was that knackered I wasn't going to go out, but the great yellow ball in the sky beckoned to a gusty offshore breeze, so the Rs100 and I were reunited once more, to shake her down after all the post nationals fixes.

Ha! straight off the beach first thing that happened was the rear sheet wrapped straight down the wiggle stick as I launched.

Other than that and the longest beat we've had at our club in a long while, typical the day you could do with a short race and they set a marathon. It was me, the Musto and a Blaze jockeying for the front spot, nice flat water and shifts kept it interesting and my windward technique's improved a bit after those nationals. Managed to keep the Blaze at bay up wind for longer than normal, but he got me as they shortened course before a long run in lighter winds that might have switched us around.

Anyway I'm glad i went out and feel I'm improving a bit trying that buttuck hanging hiking style and everything else functioned as it should, so, good day in all, faith in sailing restored.

Another weekend, another windy event, another gear failing nightmare.
This time half way round Sheppey, going well, gaining ground and the boom snaps off..

I'm getting fed up with this..

The other Alto, did O.K., got a 12th and the course record went again, couple of guys in an 800 sailed a blinding race, went off the start next to us like a scalded cat..

Excellent race, dogs blowing off chains, am really gutted that superspars crap let us down again, Rondars they totally suck. Right now.. my Alto ? Next stop...Ebay.. box of bolts for sale cheap, I'm frikking fed up with it..

Just got back from the Canoe Nationals aching & ruised, but with a smile on my face.

Good venue, good weather and a good bunch to race against and socialise with.
