Nah, I get it. I'm the ginger kid that gets told to go to the wrong pub..

They told me the nationals was at Parkstone SC when in fact the socials were elsewhere and the racing was the other side of Poole Harbour. Other than my brief interlude in the ladies changing room (my sailing specs are an old prescription)the exciting bits took place elsewhere.

I'll know next time.

And damn it was cock heavy, other than Martin's (Wadhams) charming wife who baled the moment she realised she was the lone female, there were no women..

Bit 'Blaze' like that.

Lots of issues this class needs to sort if it wants my continued support.

Graeme,

Im afraid to say it sounds like you might have been at the wrong pub! Were you told it was fancy dress night aswell?

Pfft, Graeme, at B14 events we'll cheerfully hit the bar before the sails are down- Carnac YC is very well set up in that regard (hmm, maybe needs a mention in the places to sail thread).

Will RS100 kites be coming in other colours at some point? Downwind photos of identical kites look a bit "Sailing School". Also, lots of different colours lets those trailing have a chance of figuring out who'd leading.

Here are the rules (old school)

1)Night before the regatta - the moment you meet a fellow competitor
you drink with him/her until you no longer remember who he or her were in the
first place and why your drinking with them and anyway the new mates who
have now joined you are much more fun..

1st race requires requisite vomit on start line..

2)The moment you've finished 1st days racing, tallied off and showered
boat/board put away, you hit the bar, repeat above..

3)No girly going off for drinks, smart restaurant curries dressed in ties..

4)If you can even remember what you did, you're a pussy, never mind
post details on websites.

5)A.G.M's are for shouting, more drinking, swearing and general
boisterous behaviour, not polite rubber stamping of bureaucracy no-ones
even seen.

6)Sponsors are supposed to be courted at every turn with free beer. Not
left to drink alone all billy no mate whilst y'all jolly off being all semi
detached suburban..

Y'all are a disgrace, you know it, you're riddled with guilt and you've been
called on it. I'll accept your apologies later..

Next time y'all better mtfu, I'll leave the breadknife behind, there's no way
after a race like that I can last beyond seven thirty without the requisite
boost to the alcohol blood sugar level...

And they said RS social were the stuff of legend...

Hi Keith,

You missed a cracking event - you should have been there. I hear you
have been out in that 'demo boat' rather a lot - has anyone else tried it
yet !!!!

As to the 8.4 v 10.2 discussion, the only conclusion is that there are no
conclusions !!

On both days there were both 8.4's and 10.2's going fast including big
guys on 8.4's and smaller guys (like me !) on 10.2's going fast also.

Personally I wasn't having problems on the 10.2 upwind even in the big
breeze on the Sunday - the key, for me anyway, seemed to be getting the
sail flat and I used a massive amount of outhaul, which I hadn't done
before - God knows how (?) but i even managed to get first around
windward mark in one race and 3rd in the next - just a shame that I was
so totally crap at gybing !

The one thing I did conclude is that the 8.4's seemed to be having a
slightly easier time of it gybing, probably because of the effectively
shorter boom and less roach. The boom on the 10.2 is a total mother f--
--er when it comes across in that breeze and even worse when, as it did
to me on too many occasions, comes to the midpoint then goes back
again !

There were a lot of people swimming on the downwind, particularly
where you were forced into gybing for the layline or the gate - it was
carnage on occasions and only a miracle that there weren't more
collisions.

On the final downwind, I was totally drained and sadly decided it was
actually quicker to drop the kite, tack around and then re-hoist - sad but
effective ! On the finish line I actually dropped and did a double tack
(rather than single sail gybe) and made up a place.

Plenty still to learn, which is part of what makes this boat so much fun.

The guys that won, Neal and Huw, were just f'ing good ! Neal did a total
horizon job in the final race (like you do in the Vortex !). They just looked
smooth and in control - and having fun ! Followed Huw upwind a couple
of times and he didn't actually appear to be hiking that hard the bugger !
The boat was just slipping along very nicely at it was definately more a
case of skillful sailing rather than a battle of fitness.

As to hiking I have started wearing hikers. Resisted to start with because
it is so comfortable but they do give you more grunt and help preserve
your thigh muscles (apologies if you already know this but I hadnt used
them previously). You dont need thick ones though.

Despite GRF's assertions (where were you Greame ?!) there was plenty of
socialising and a lot of beer drunk - I had a spinny head both nights !
Demo Dave definately gets the prize though for demolishing that bottle
of Sambuca (well done Jimbo - great effort !)

It would be great to see you at our next event Keith - Draycote in
October.

Cheers

Chris

So,  reading between the lines, there were a few who would probably sail with an big sail if it had been lighter wind / forecast. Not necessarilly a bad thing - makes the boat more flexible for the big but jocks. Would be interesting to see what choices people made if an event was over a few more days so more liklihood of varied conditions.

Laser193713 - good advice on hiking - wish I'd known half of that when I was 20 - as it was I've been hiking all wrong for decades so too late for me!
RE speed of big vs little rigs,  I sailed with a big rig on first demo - it was very very quick in a F1-2 - certainly the extra cloth was working well. I don't see how it couldn't be faster than an 8.4 with the same helm / skill.  It did start to overpower me as the wind came up, so I can see that around a F3 it would be slower for me( I'm only 72kg and 5'5") .

Was out on an 8.4 for one race at weekend - capsized twice on gybes but nailed another 5 or 6 - trouble is I have no real idea as to what was different between the two.  Is that common?

4 Races B2B is a bit savage. I've done it plenty of times, and always suffered - and thats not even when sailing a hard hiking boat. Better to cater for the 'athleticism' of the majority I feel - or at least some half way compromise - you do want them to come back next time - yes?

Thank the Lord - I thought that if Chris C wasn't socialising there must be something seriously wrong - glad to hear it was just grumph going for his evening nap and missing out on the fun.

Graham: if you'd been in the bar at the right time you'd have seen me, and if you'd been at the meal on Sat night you'd have seen two of me! (At least I saw two of everyone else next day there were some less enthusiastic people wandering around ) You just had to be in the right place and there was plenty of drinking going on- when I looked for you I'm sure you'd been taken home for an early night....

Regarding who did well, there were some good calibre guys who suffered from lack of time in the boat, and the locals had clearly benefitted from having a fleet for some time before the event (plus being good sailors in the first place), but there was clearly some talent out there that had come in under the radar. Be interesting to see how the results pan out between the rigs in 10-12kts of wind, roll on the next event!
