I've fallen into a bit of a trap here, much like the boys on the 'Pimp my boat' thread, except I seem to be throwing wonga at my bike.

Oh well... here she is!

I've had more people piss me off since. No number of lights or amount fluro/retro reflective clothing will make you visible to taxi drivers I reckon.

Got a new bike though. One actually suited to doing ten miles each way every day.

I almost got taken out last week at some temporary traffic lights in Kingsbridge. A  in a 4x4 tried to drive through me when the traffic started pulling away (even though I was cycling as fast as the BMW in front of me) then when we were clear of the road works she went for a bonsai overtake and hacked in about a foot in front of me...

Little did she know that there was going to be another set of lights 200 yards down the road, so I pulled up next to her (being a smoker her window was open), and asked if her erratic and life threatening driving had been down to incompetency behind the wheel or merely that she was a ?!

She wound the window up, so I nipped through the pedestrian walkway and headed on my way. When she finally passed me again she gave me a wide berth! What an idiot!

Tell me about it James, I've not got a roadie, but have felt the need for a full suss as my hard tail is a pain in the arse! (to coin a phrase)

cycling along country roads with potholes in the dark is "fun".

Gone for a commuter/tourer, so not super skinny tyres, but the roads (even where not gaping holes) are bloody rough at the moment.

iv only had my roadie since october. Just getting the hang of pedalling sat down but with the weight on your legs not bum. Makes for a much softer ride.I have had to drop my tyre pressures for fear of bending a rim.

I have to agree with Al on some elements. I communt eon country roads that are not lit and run Catseye R3 on the front with a battery Catseye flasher and on the back two flasters. I also wear reflective gloves, shoes and yellow jacket. The downside is I still occasionally get well and truelly carved up. cars do not expect a bike to be doing mid 20s when they are in the early 30s on an overtake. Have yet to be fully run off the road though.

The number of people I see riding dark bikes in black and blue kit is a regular occurrance and we had one killed on my route 15 months ago

So if commuting on a bike, what is your life/injury worth and if £200 - 300 for suitable kit is to much, then you are courting an accident some time in the future and are as Al classified a terminal idiot. This is not for any particular person on the trhead but a general comment. Also think of the money you are saving in petrol and wear and tear on you car

So think safe and save money and buy good kit. My commute bike is a Specialised Cirus Pro 2009 as I consider my MTB not suitable for everyday use as the parts, due to possible corrosion and debit wear, would exceed the value of the Cirus in a couple of years
