The only reason there are so many French 'kite foiling' is 'cos they're sh*t in moths.

I would have said antisocial kite boarding has no chance of getting in the Olympics but they allowed snow boarding similar mentality.

Not really - snowboarding has been around since the 1970s.  It lost its edgy attitude the moment it started poaching punters from the ski dorks and week-a-year crew.  It's pretty much a mainstream fixture at all but one or two douche-bag ski resorts like Alta.  Snowboard technology has also filtered into skiing - twin tip freestyle skis (like Candide Thovex uses for some of the most epic winter action on you tube) all came about from snowboard tech - in turn from windsurf tech if you follow the parallels in development.

Sure, there are still some snowboarders who think they're cooler than skiers... they're typically knob heads who haven't grown up.  They don't represent the athletic side of the sport, nor the general public perception.  I've also had friends take the piss as I'm on a snowboard... they sound a bit pathetic to be honest, and it doesn't say much for their own skiing credentials that I can even keep up on my plank... I ain't that quick, far from it, and skis should be a lot faster!

GB Park and Pipe train together - skiers and snowboarders and most UK snowboarders I know have nothing but praise for the charm of the UK's Number 1 freestyle skier at the mo - James Woods.

Ester Ledecka won the Super G (skiing) gold on a borrowed set of spares, despite her natural affinity towards snowboarding before the games commenced.  She's also competitive in the RS:X - what a natural athlete!

Most European recreational skiers and boarders just want to ensure there's enough snow in the future to keep their passions alive for the next generation.  Jeremy Jones - pro US snowboarder - is highly respected amongst both ski and snowboard communities for his ecological works.  And if you really want to earn your turns, every snowboarder knows that 'split boarding' (skiing uphill / boarding down) is pretty highly regarded- so again a major crossover for disciplines.

I know you were only trolling, but it's worth dispelling stereotypes when you get the chance.  Bottom line for most of us who ski and/or snowboard - no one gives a sh*t what was strapped to your feet in a avalanche.

We also acknowledge the total sh*t-fest that was the women's Slopestyle final in Pyeongchang - ruined by TV schedulers and certainly didn't showcase the sport and female contribution to its progress, properly:

Perhaps the Finn class (and IKA) should take note... the Olympics isn't what it used to be, and certainly doesn't mean as much as it once did.

You may think that, but here's a nationality list from the 91-boat Finn Europeans in Cadiz a couple of weeks ago (without repititions).

GBR
NED
SWE
NZL
USA
BRA
CRO
FRA
GRE
SUI
FIN
EST
TUR
ESP
CZE
CAN
ARG
NOR
GER
ITA
AUS
POL
RUS
IRL
DEN
SLO
POR
CYP
HKG
IRI
BER
AUT
UKR
SVK

It may not be as inclusive as we'd wish, but with representation from Argentina, Turkey, Iran, Ireland, Hong Kong and Bermuda you can see that there is development in the non-traditionally 'up-there' sailing countries. It's certainly more varied (and well attended, despite the relative costs) that the Kiting lists.

Can any sport claim to be truly ethnically diverse?

From what I can see each sport tends to end up dominated by those who are most suited or who apply the most focus...

Is sailing the most expensive olympic sport in terms of equipment $ per head?  I'm pretty sure a Finn or Star ( to pick on two boat types) costs more than a pair of skis, skates, running shoes,  etc.   I don't know the cost of a 8 man rowing boat but per head, I assume it is cheaper than a Finn or Star.   You get the idea.

High tech sailing dinghies are likely to out of reach for most aspiring athletes in developing nations.   I  therefore think that a Laser with two rigs, big and small, should be the only equipment needed for Olympic sailing and the boats should be provided by the host nation.

I'm sure someone will be along on a moment, shooting down my argument,  saying the boat is only a minor cost an olympic campaign.

Perhaps we have to accept olympic sailing is and always has been the preserve of the wealthy and wealthy nations.

Equestrian is not cheap; do horses count as equipment?

To be fair it is the labour costs of support staff and athletes that rack up bill far quicker than equipment.

That said sailing at Olympic level must be one of the most expensive sports.

But how much money is spent in the wind tunnel optimising Jason Kenny's helmet?
