When deciding how many boats have been sold, remember they started at sail number2000, and then jumped to 20000 rather than having sail numbers over 2999.

Latest boat numbers, APPROX: 22370. I.e. 2370 sold since launch in approx. 12 years (the first 2 indicates its a 2000).
The Class Association wants to stay separate from the RS Associations - but that does NOT mean the class wont join in with some of the RS events! In the past, the Laser2000 was part of the Laser circuit, and often had joint events with 4000, 5000, Vortex, Vago, etc. These events are likely to continue, and some joint events with RS classes might come along as well. All in all, with anywhere between 25 and 35 boats at the Millennium Series meetings last year, and 50-70 boats at the Nationals for the past 5 or 6 years, and a 3rd place at the Endeavour in 2012... Things are looking great for the future of the 2000 class

But they probably have to do all the admin themselves whereas the RS Association have a number of paid elves to arrange what the individual classes want...

Hi,
The 2000 class always prefer to hold events at club which have a good 2K fleet and always prefer to have single class events. So it is unlikely that we will join in with RS association events.
There are only two multiclass events on the calendar this year and those are at large reservoirs where it is expensive/hard to get single class events.

The L2000 assoc is one of the very best in the country, and I advise them to stay just as they are. If you are successful don't change the formula. The L2000s lead, manage, and take responsibility for their single class. They provide great value for money as well as effectively running their class.
Contrast that with what Ian above says of the RS Assn. "Admin done by paid elves." Which model would you prefer for your class? |

erm, pay for the elves personally... we shouldn't paint a completely commercial picture of the RS Class Association. There is a lot of in kind support from the sailors and a good chunk of financial and physical support from RS themselves (as you'd expect of course, one of their USPs is actually giving a sh*t once they've sold you a boat). The 'elves' are there to ensure the devil in the detail doesn't get forgotten... hence why you'll see good photographers at most events, events at clubs that would otherwise be reluctant to host and above all, the smooth administration of one of the best amateur dinghy racing programmes across the world. I'd say they do a blinding job, it can't be easy relying on volunteer support and managing the expectations of all those members. However if the 2k guys want to see how things pan out, fair enough... but do look at the end of season champs and sprint events, the boat would be great for these events and I'd imagine most RS owners would only be too glad to welcome the 2k'ers into the fold.

..and the Elves are there to take direction from the class ctte's, not the other way round. You have a sailor led association without all the boring admin. And although RS do provide some financial support as well as the physical event support, it is by no means critical to the association which remains independant. Please don't be mistaken in thinking the RS Association isn't led by it's members. Ian

There is a detail in all this that it is LDC who have taken over production, not RS. It appears that there is a difference between the 2, and is one reason why the boat would never be the RS2000.
