Congrats Mike! May i admit that i managed an A* early as well, as did some of my friends, and well done to everyone on exam results in general. That was off topic. I apologise.
To the topic title: I was out this weekend, after being battered around in a topper for about 5 mins, we gave up and took out mirrors, and had an amazing time just bashing around, planing half the time with spray going everywhere .

I too was out sailing a laser at the lymington open in howling winds and huge waves.  Crazy conditions and a lot of capsizes, but a lot of fun

Force 6+, gusting lots on Sunday and 2x 29ers out at our place.  Plenty of swimming and one ripped jib, but it looked damned good fun from my pico .

Don't let anyone tell you its purely a low wind boat.  Superb in almost every way and really doubt the RS500 will better it on pure performance.

But the hull isn't too bouyant and the competition is fierce and fit; so not for lazy and/or heavy grownups really.  But if I was 17 and had a rich dad ....................

'Low wind boat' - take it you're referring to the Pico there, Nick?

I've always viewed the 29'er as a bit of a PY dog in light airs. Watched one flying once in a F.4, then the wind eased to a 3, and it slowed like an insect that had just run out of oxygen...

Everyone seems to have had loads of wind. At ELYC we had OK wind on saturday- f2-3  building to 4-5, but racing was called off on sunday due to having no wind

9er to stay upright after we capsized it was so funny. as soon as i can get
rid of the feva im getting one .
Why I'm even asking this I
dont know, your bloody fifteen and therefore imho "know the square root
of diddly squat", but since you seem to be the only person on this forum
to claim to have sailed an RS 500, how did you draw your conclusions v
speed against the 29er? Sometimes things feel fast (like the Musto)
because they are over canvassed and unstable, it doesn't necessarily
mean they will be round the cans. A 29er would disintegrate in the
conditions we often sail in, so its out. I was really impressed with one I
saw at Grafham, but its a definite no no for me right now, so the question
is, how much slower and why? How heavy was your crew?

ok firstly i may be only 15 but i have just done my maths gcse early
and got an a* so i think i know the square root of a reasonable amount.[/
P]

we decided the 29er was faster than the 500 after we went to
burghfield and tried out one. it was ok at 1st because we are not used to
trapeze boats but after a while we realized that upwind a national 12 was
keeping pace with us and on the run (this may have been because we
dont know the best angles downwind) the boat just didnt seem fast.

we tried out the 29er later that day on queen mary resevoir (freinds sail
there) ther wasnt that much difference in windstrength but the 9er planed
upwind pretty much constantlywhereas the 500 only started to plane
downwind. downwind the 9er was so much more responsive and quieter
than the 500 so we figured it must have been going quicker.

i couldnt say why the 9er is quicker than the 500 but it seemed a lot
more responsive and it was so much quieter than the 500. the 500 is
probably going to be better for someone who wants to learn to sail
competitively with a trapeze and an asymetric but for proper racing the
9er will be better because it is that bit more refined.

me and my crew combined come to about 120-130kg.

i hooe that was a good enough comparison, i dont realy know why but
the 500 just wasnt as exciting as the 29er.

oh and one other thing, the 500 was easier to right than the 9er, it
came up quicker and stayed vertical whereas the 9er took longer to come
up and spat us off before we could get it moving again

Well done on your maths exam Mike, what gets an A star these days?
40% pass? No I'm just kidding, getting a maths qualification like that is
excellent, I'm pleased for you.
Thanks also for your report, that's exactly what I wanted to hear, I'd love
to sail a 29 er, but neither my experience, not the water I sail on would
suit it. And what you describe means it will suit me perfectly, neither of
us are good boat handlers, but we're both very seasoned competition
sailors, so the last thing we want is a difficult boat, just something with a
bit more room to move around in, and certainly not a straight rockered
nose diver with nothing up front.
As for your test, Q.M is higher than Burghfield and gets more wind and
that little bit steadier without the trees round it, I've often driven past
Burghfield but never sailed there, but ti lloks quite constrictive and not
the sort of open water you can get anything particularly wound up on.

your right, burghfield wasnt an ideal test site for the 500 but i have a feeling even if we sailed it on QM it would have still been slower and less of a challenge, if you dont feel ready for a 9er i would say the 500 is a reasonable boat to learn in.

Well, we got a pleasant sailing breeze from the East for the first time on a
Sunday in a long while. Blowing about 8- 12 kts and relatively flat
(though nothing like you inland boys know as flat). I managed to crack
single handed trapezing whilst larking around waiting for Steve to get
changed, just like snowboarding, its easier riding regular than fakie,
making Port my favoured left foot forward tack.

Starboard is just a little trickier, I remember this from the Musto, had the
same problem with that.

So, given it wasn't that windy Steve took the helm, to give me the wire
practise I bought the boat for in the first place, we found out a bit more
about this boat today. It works just like an old windsurfing round board,
letting it heal over as if we were "railing" a round board actually improves
the upwind performance. Here we've been trying to sail it flat (cos that's
what the old text books used to say, (I've still got an old copy of Start to
Win by Eric Twiname)and in fairness it works better that way when its
windy. But in medium wind the 12 knots we had today, heeling it gets an
extra couple of windward degrees and more speed off the foil.

Y'all will probably come back and say you know it, but I haven't read
anything so far that says that, so excuse me telling y'all how to suck
eggs, we are after all trying to learn how to stay up front.

Today again we creamed the start then screwed up the first beat by over
standing, we went round about 7th cocked up the down wind legs,
tacking down wind into an oncoming tide and a very deep reach we made
a pigs ear of the angles, and were in the teens by the leeward. However
by then we'd discovered our upwind technique and a couple of shifts,
then understanding and letting the tide do its work got us back in
contention.
A three sail tight top reach but the tide allowing us to stay low and foot
off beneath them all gave us third round the gybe, but then it all went
down the toilet as the wind dropped and we were wallowing down a 2nd
reach that had become a run and the little 3k sucked the water as we
awaited the inevitable.

The beginner in the lazer radial asking us which mark she should go to
next as she cruised past had us slashing our wrists so the bilges ran red.
