Only an unfairly talented or disgustingly arrogant man would feel aggrieved at being beaten by Nick Craig. Say no more. On a sensible note, the phants got moved back a minute this year, which puts them in the 1030 to 1040 class. Nick probably beat me by half a minute in the end which, assuming equal sailing ability (alright, alright) means that 1025 ish would be fair (in relation to my boat anyway) as I had suggested a while ago. Having said that I was pretty rusty not having sailed much in 6 months. Mind you nobody looked particularly slick with loads of errors as bodies and boats stopped working in the conditions as the race went on. Handicap controversy of the day was the allocation of a start time pertaining to a handicap of about 1130 for the laser. Now I'm the first to say that the 1078 handicap is very harsh, but the 50ish jump is excessive in the extreme. Matt Reid would have come 4th if he hadn't sailed inside the barges. He came 4 th at the laser nationals this year and is a tasty sailor in breeze but a hiking dinghy should never have finished that high in breeze. He would have walked it on that yardstick in 8kts. Memory of the day was pete Barton in the cherub all over the place, tfoil roundups and 3 capsizes that I saw, and still finishing 4th. Apart from that I thought the merlins seemed very quick for their py as hiking boats go, although they are wide I guess and aren't so strong relative to the phants etc in the light. The winners in the 505 looked nice and slick and smooth. The 505 being a high wind PY performer, the flipside of the phant. The lord giveth and the lord taketh away. I had to use a basin of hot water just to derig my agriculturally simple boat. Like last year I reckon I'll have to wait 2 weeks for the feeling to return to my fingertips . We are overdue a mild one I reckon.... |

Neal_g congrats - I sailed a miracle at the Redoubt in the late 70s - used to sail really well for the first race of the season, before it got waterlogged and heavy

I called starboard on a Miracle dinghy in 1978 on my windsurfer, in
Folkestone Harbour, he sailed straight into and over me.

3 started, 2 breakage retirements and the other retired cold. Not sure
how they were doing till then but think they started with the rs400s. Not hiking weather but the merlins showed that the wider gruntier hikers don't suffer so much. Plus there was a heavy wwlw accent which would suit a d one or 100. |

Didn't know Smithy was in 505's nowadays, he must be one of the best dinghy sailors around who isn't a boatbuider, sailmaker etc.

Can anyone tell me what the salors were wearing on their hands? These extream conditions would be a test of what really does work.
